In Arizona .. 29-31, 30-25, 26-30, 30-23, 15-8
Nice win for a very talented and physical but VERY young Arizona squad. This is only their second win of the PAC-10 season.
Stars for Arizona were OH Dosty with 29 kills at .365 and RS Goodenough with 15 kills at .419. Arizona also outblocked UO 19 to 9.

yeah, a pretty wierd concept ...
... but also very wierd is that Oregon just added another player to its roster for the remainder of the year. A 6-2 OH who has played b-ball at Oregon (a Pac-10 all freshman teamer, even) for the last two years but will not play b-ball this year (not really sure why). This apparently left the b-ball team with only 10 players and now they have added a soccer player. It's the great athlete swap! I can't imagine that this new v-ball player sees the floor this year not having competed since high school, but interesting none the less.
Oregon now has to beat Arizona St. tomorrow and one of Stan, Cal, USC or UCLA to finish the year 9-9 in the Pac-10. Still a great improvement over a one-win conference season last year.

She is a former McDonald's All American who did not want to return to a part time role on the BBall team. She is very athletic and played vball in HS.

Yeah, I almost snorted milk out my nose just seeing the thread title.
Which is really gross if you consider that the last time I had milk was yesterday morning.

Her name came up in a discussion on Cyberbears.org: mb15.scout.com/fcalinsiderfrm38.showMessage?topicID=8125.topicpreview.tinyurl.com/yjrz5awww.registerguard.com/news/2006/11/07/e1.sp.forristall.1107.p1.php?section=sportsSupposedly it's due to a huge disagreement with the basketball coach. Also - the soccer team was unexpectedly left out of the NCAA Tournament after finishing 2nd in the Pac-10 and being ranked #17 in the big national soccer poll. Supposedly they had a really poor RPI ranking.

Thanks, bearclause. Sounds like there is trouble in the Oregon b-ball program. I knew about the snub to the scoccer team which was a big slap in the face. Anyone have any idea if Forristall has the tools to make an impact this year, or if next year is more realistic? I hope this is a happier experience for her. She will be a sophmore athletically according to the v-ball press release.

She will be a sophmore athletically according to the v-ball press release. I think the way it works is that she had five years to complete four (theoretical) years of VB eligibility. Since she hasn't played college VB yet, she pretty much just has the three years left to get in whatever she can. I know of many athletes who completed four straight years in one sport and played another sport in their fifth year.

Forristall is an over 10 ft jumper that hits the ball very high! She sees the block very well. She moves laterally faster than anyone I have seen....

Here's a bit of the press release from the Arizona site. Looks like Dosty is starting to realize her potential ... 5.8 k/g at .365 is darn good! With such a young and talented team Arizona will be better next year, but so will Oregon. It's great for the conference to have tough competion every weekend! Tucson, Ariz. – Freshman Whitney Dosty posted a career-high 29 kills to lead the Arizona volleyball team (11-15, 2-12 Pac-10) to an upset victory over No. 24 Oregon (17-6, 7-6 Pac-10) in five games on Thursday night in McKale Center. Game scores were 29-31, 30-25, 26-30, 30-23, and 15-8. Arizona snapped a season-long seven match losing streak by hitting .284 (79-27-183) as a team, the third-highest mark for the Wildcats this season. Oregon hit .222 (70-29-185) in the match. The Wildcats also posted 19.0 team blocks, as four Wildcats posted double-figure kills on the night. Individually for Arizona, Dosty’s career-best 29 kills came on a .365 (29-6-63) hitting percentage, as she became the first Wildcat this season to break the 20-kill plateau. Senior Stephanie Butkus registered a season-high 69 assists, three-shy of her career-high mark of 72 set on Sept. 5, 2004 at Hawaii. Sophomores Randy Goodenough and Brooke Buringrud each posted 15 kills apiece, and freshman Jacy Norton finished with a career-best 11 kills and eight blocks. “If you look at the stats, we did not have that many errors, which gave us the opportunity to score,” head coach Dave Rubio said. “I thought our serving was terrific. We came in with the mindset of competing, and mid-way through the first game, our attitude changed the dynamic of the match.” ... www.arizonaathletics.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=8131&SPID=517&DB_OEM_ID=1600&ATCLID=682896

Here's the Oregon version ... TUCSON, Ariz. – Pac-10 road trips to the Desert have never been kind to the Oregon volleyball team, but Thursday’s loss at Arizona was both painful and unexpected. The 24th-ranked Ducks (17-6, 7-6 Pac-10) built a 2-1 lead before the Wildcats (11-15, 2-12) came storming back to win 29-31, 30-25, 26-30, 30-23 and 15-8. “This was the first time in a long time that we have worried about mistakes, and it cost us,” said head coach Jim Moore. “We dwelled on missed points instead of looking ahead to the next opportunity to score.” Tied at 15-all in the fourth set, UA swung the momentum in its favor with a 15-8 run to even the match and never surrendered the lead the rest of the night. “They passed great in Game 4 and we failed to put pressure on them with our serving,” Moore said. “They got in a rhythm and every ball they touched turned to gold.” The Ducks dropped the first three points of Game 5 before rallying back with three of the next four. But the Wildcats, an NCAA Elite Eight squad last season, ripped off six straight points for a commanding 10-3 lead, effectively ending the match. Freshman middle blocker Sonja Newcombe, who was recruited by Arizona before signing with the Ducks, led Oregon with 20 kills and 24.5 points. Newcombe also hit a team-high .296 (20-4-54). UA frosh Whitney Dosty, a 6-3 hitter, had match-highs of 29 kills and 32.0 points. Senior Erin Little had 15 kills, and sophomore Mira Djuric 14 for the Ducks, who also received a match-best 26 digs from sophomore Katie Swoboda. Oregon dropped Game 4 despite hitting .308 (17-5-39) as UA converted at a .370 (19-2-46) clip. For the match, the Wildcats hit .284, the highest percentage by a UO opponent this season. UA also had a big edge on the block, 19-9, including eight total stuffs from freshman blocker Jacy Norton. Oregon will look to salvage a split on the trip Friday night in Tempe against Arizona State. The Sun Devils (12-13, 4-10) defeated Oregon State, 3-1, on Thursday. www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=682901&DB_OEM_ID=500

Good for Arizona! They've had the potential to beat ranked teams like this for a long time, but were just having problems on the court. It sounds like they mostly pulled things together for this match and played up to that potential.
If you follow the link to Arizona's recap there are two video links on the page: a post-game Q&A with two players (free), and video of the entire match (subscription). I'm waiting for the update to Baumer's blog though.
Bad news for Oregon though -- at least bad news for their AVCA ranking.
