No. 23 Ohio State Sweeps Iowa

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 23rd ranked Ohio State (19-7, 9-7 Big Ten) women's volleyball team, with four players having double-figure points in the contest, defeated Iowa (13-14, 2-13), 3-0, (30-25, 30-26, 30-14) Friday night in St. John Arena. OSU's Danielle Meyer (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a match-high 17.5 points in the match with 13 kills, three solo blocks and three assists, with Ami Stevens (Jr., Centerburg, Ohio) and Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dan, Wis.) adding 12.5 each. Stevens had 10 kill, two ace serves and an assist block while McCarthy added 11 kills, an ace serve and an assist block. OSU's Anna Szerszen (Fr., Conflans Ste Hne, France) contributed 11.5 points with 10 kills, an ace serve and an assist block. Iowa's Jen Barcus had a team-high 14 points for the Hawkeyes with 11 kills, a solo block and four assist blocks.
Ohio State kills from McCarthy and Szerszen opened game one for the Buckeyes. A Megan Schipper kill made it 2-1. Two kills from Meyer and a Meyer-Szerszen block opened a 5-1 OSU lead. At 15-9, a Meyer kill and an Iowa error gave OSU an eight point lead at 17-9. Hawkeye kills from Alicia Johnson, a solo block from Barcus and an OSU error trimmed the lead to five at 17-12. Leading 22-17, a Stevens kill and an Iowa error made it 24-17. An OSU error, two Catherine Smale kills and one from Kiley Fister cut the lead to three at 24-21. Leading 27-24, Ohio State with kills from Stevens and McCarthy reached game point at 29-24. A Barcus kill stopped the game point at 29-25. Ohio State won the game with a McCarthy kill at 30-25. The Buckeyes hit .340 for the game to .214 for Iowa.
Tied at two in game two, Buckeye kills from Szerszen and Stevens gave Ohio State a 4-2 lead. Iowa, with a Smale kill, a Melanie Meister ace serve and a Barcus kill took a 5-4 lead. A Meyer kill and an Iowa error returned the lead to OSU at 6-5. An Iowa block by Barcus and Smale tied the game at six. Tied at nine, a Schipper kill put Iowa ahead, 10-9. OSU tied the game with a McCarthy kill at 10 and took a 12-10 lead with a Szerszen-Meyer block and a Szerszen kill. A Schipper kill made it 12-11. Two Iowa errors put OSU ahead, 14-11. Hawkeye kills by Smale and Barcus and an OSU error tied the game at 14. A kill from Stevens and an Iowa error made it 16-14, OSU. A Barcus kill cut the margin to 16-15. OSU took an 18-15 lead with kills from Stevens and Felicia Jones (Sr., Concord, Ont.). Iowa cut the lead to 18-17 with a Smale kill and a Stacy Vitali-Barcus block. The squad exchanged points to reach 21-20, OSU. Buckeye kills from Meyer and Szerszen and a Meyer solo block gave Ohio State a 24-21 lead. At 26-23, a McCarthy kill and a Hawkeye error made it 28-23. A Schipper kill cut the lead to four at 28-24. A Szerszen kill set game point at 29-24. Iowa stopped two game points with a Meister kill and an OSU error to cut the lead to 29-26. A Hawkeye error ended the game, giving Ohio State a 30-26 win and a 2-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .447 for the game to .244 for Iowa.

A Stevens' kill and errors by both teams made it 15-9. Two Iowa errors, a Meyer-Stevens block, a Meyer solo block and her kill and a Stevens' kill took the Ohio State lead to 21-9. An OSU error stopped the run at 21-10. A Main kill and a Stevens’s ace serve made it 23-10. A Buckeye error made it 23-11. Kills by Meyer and Jones made it 25-11. A Barcus kill and an OSU error made it 25-13. A Jones kill and a Hawkeye error moved the score to 26-14. A Jones-McCarthy block and an Iowa error put the lead at 28-14. A Szerszen ace serve set match point at 29-14. A solo block from Jones ended the game at 30-14, OSU, for a 3-0 match victory for the Buckeyes. Ohio State hit .333 for the game to -.067 for Iowa.
Ohio State hit .372 for the match to .129 for Iowa. The Buckeyes had a 57-39 advantage in kills and a six to three margin in ace serves. OSU gave up eight service errors to three for Iowa. Defensively, Ohio State had a 61-48 advantage in digs with Iowa's Smale recording a match-high 19 and OSU's Ashley Kiel (Sr., Allenton, Wis.) a team-high 17. At the net, the Buckeyes had a nine to seven edge in team blocks. OSU's Meyer collected a match-high six blocks with a career-high three solo blocks and three assists. Iowa's Barcus recorded five blocks with a solo and four assists. OSU's Main posted 44 assists in the match to 27 for Iowa's Fister.
The Buckeyes return to the road next week to face Michigan Friday and Michigan State Saturday.
