Actually, I forgot about New Mexico State with only one loss, (still?) and don't know when they got that. Might have to push them ahead of St. John's.

It's also true that we all read too much into one match. Teams have off nights. The GREAT teams may not, but I think we can all agree that USC was probably the last great team -- and that was three years ago? Maybe I'm not giving 2005 UW enough credit. '05 UW wasn't that great. Name another team that went through the entire NCAA playoffs without losing a SINGLE GAME, AND did NOT play a single match at home during those playoffs.

Stanford '04?
that is not the argument. Volleyball is not as refined across the board now. Teams are not as good... however overall, they are all getting better.
Just parity... more even everywhere, fewer amazing teams.

Bzzzzt. Wrong. Thanks for playing. Besides losing a game to ... you guessed it Washington. Stanford also lost some other games along the way during the playoffs. If I remember correctly, Florida took Stanford to 5.

Name another team that went through the entire NCAA playoffs without losing a SINGLE GAME, AND did NOT play a single match at home during those playoffs. Of course, the only other team to ever sweep all of their NCAA games was Texas in 1988, but that was in a field of 32 (so only 5 matches, not 6) and they played some at home. Nebraska had the chance last year (minus the "no games at home" part), but something happened in the finals...

Nebraska had the chance last year (minus the "no games at home" part), but something happened in the finals... To be fair, Washington had a little help last year. Some of the teams that they might otherwise have worried about were upset in the playoffs. But that does nothing to diminish last year's Huskies; it's something that happens every year. Also, the '05 Washington team did not go undefeated, and I believe at least one the teams that were labeled as "great" here did. They may have dropped games, but they didn't drop a match. As for the lament about now having powerful teams.... It seems to me that last year there really were two strong teams, a cut above the others. Only one of them could win the championship. And I have a feeling that a few years from now Washington will end up in that list of all-time great teams. There's room for debate about how they played during the season, but during the tournament they were a great team.

It's a down year for the Big12. I think the BIG 12 will only get 4 teams into the tourney this year....they really only deserve 3 bids. Based on what? Nebr, OU, Texas are already in. Colorado secured their spot tonight. Mizzou is nearly a lock. ISU is very close. Based on what would you limit the Big12 to 3 teams? Or just another ... nevermind. Based on my understanding of the selection criteria. 4 is all the Big 12 deserves. The tournament should be reduced to 32 so the weeds can be weeded out.

The Big 12 will get 6 and they deserve it. And those weeds you talked about just picked off the #1 team in the country. Volleyball in the top conferences is amazingly competiive from top to bottom. That's whats making our sport better. Every match anyone can win and the quality of play has improved. Get off the high horse and show respect to these players and coaches who are pushing everyone, every night.

Where would the country be without the upper ruling class of volleyball?
BiK does have a point, without these elite teams showing the nation how to act, how will these other teams know what to do?
I think all this parity is Rally scoring's fault.
