Volleyball Outlasts Texas Tech, 3-2

LUBBOCK, Texas - Baylor freshman outside hitter Katie Sanders (Katy, Texas) heated up down the stretch and had 16 kills to lead the Bears to a 3-2 (30-21, 22-30, 30-26, 20-30, 15-12) victory over Texas Tech in Big 12 volleyball action Saturday night at United Spirit Arena.
The win secures the Bears' (17-12, 5-11 Big 12) first winning season since 2001, and the Bears' five conference wins are the most in head coach Jim Barnes' three-year tenure.
Redshirt freshman Kelsey Smith (Lubbock, Texas) had 14 kills, eight digs and four service aces in her homecoming, while senior middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.) and freshman middle blocker Anna Breyfogle (Buda, Texas) added 12 kills each.
Freshman setter Taylor Barnes (Arlington, Texas) had a solid all-around effort with 55 assists, nine kills and six digs. Junior libero Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) led the Bears defensively with 16 digs, while senior right-side hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) 13 digs to go along with nine kills.
Philister Sang led Texas Tech (11-14, 4-12) with 17 kills and had nine digs. Kiley Lyons chipped in with 11 kills and 12 digs, while Alicia Ostmeyer added 10 kills. Jenn Harrell led the Red Raiders defensively with 15 digs. Amy Charlebois had eight blocks, and Robyn Bucy had seven.
Baylor hit .244 for the match, while holding Texas Tech to .204, and also outdug them, 60-52. The Red Raiders outblocked the Bears, 14.5-10.0.
The Bears return home to host Kansas Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Ferrell Center.
