I just watched the Stanford/UCLA match on my DVR. All I can say is ERIN WALLER. Has she been playing like this at all this year? I hope she can consistently play like this. It will really help open up the outside for Barboza and Richards.

It will really help open up the outside for Barboza and Richards. She has been slowly improving as the season has went on, but the UCLA match was by FAR something we had not known she was capable of. I hope this gives her some momentum and courage for the rest of the season. We have now seen what she can do, and let's hope she continues to do it!

I have a shoutout to Erin's dad: where is my ball, man? Jay was supposed to get that from you last year already!

As long as we're shouting out to EW, let me join the parade. Erin was PrepVolleyball's National Junior and Senior of the Year her last two prep years and I got to know her better than most.
What a great kid! I'm so happy to learn you're starting to kick butt for Stanford. Sorry I haven't made it to your matches when you were up in Oregon, but I was out of state both years. Hopefully before you graduate!
Keep up the good work. Best of luck the rest of the way.

Not that it really matters that much, but what was her ranking from PrepVB out of high school?

#43.
That'll be $25 to RichKern and PrepVB.

Thanks for pointing that out. I thought I'd missed Stanford. Road trip!

She didn't play that extensively when Stanford played Hawaii at the beginning of the year (but then, the way Hawaii played, . . . well, never mind). Anyway, I got to see her in one practice while they were in Hawaii and she was just blasting the ball -- as hard as Barboza and Richards. I was thinking . . . I think we're going to be in trouble!

At the start of the season, Erin was slated for left side (it's even in her player bio on GoStanford.com)... and that's how the season went until, at one of Stanford's early conference matches, Erin was suddenly subbed in as the OPP in the front row... to her amazement, from what she said after the match... and produced. She had a fabulous match on Saturday... in parts of Game 3, she was dominant. Though Ashley Ivy and Jen Hucke were solid contributors to several national championship teams, I don't remember either of them ever looking like that.
Against weaker opponents, I think Coach Dunning will choose to rest Kristin Richards' knees, plug Erin in at L2 and give Nji Nnamani and Janet Okogbaa more playing time... I wouldn't be surprised if Kristin didn't play at all in Corvallis... but, barring injuries, I think Erin will be OPP in the front row for the rest of the season.
I think part of the reason Erin got her opportunity at OPP was how many in-system sets Stanford's OPP has to do in transition... Bryn Kehoe digs a lot of balls... and, from what we've seen in games so far, Erin has the best balance of hitting, blocking and setting between herself, Nji and Janet (who doesn't seem comfortable setting balls at this level). Given Stanford's three person serve receive (the two outsides and the libero), in the back row, the OPP's responsibilities seem to be a balance of digging and setting... Nji is winning that competition so far.

Did not see UCLA game, but have seen multiple Cardinal games this year. Waller can hit from OPP, but needs the right set; in my opinion was not connecting with Kehoe that consistently, not clear why. Obviously something was different against UCLA, as a guess she was geting a good swing, and she can hit. She does block well and give a presence at the net as an opposite. Nji has been impressive in the backrow, but not scoring points from the front OPP.
