i've seen a few articles here and there on the FIVB site referring to numbers of viewers tuning into different high level matches. this year japan grabs a couple million per wc match and china had some ungodly number tune in for the olympics. and i'm sure as tourneys went on that these numbers just got larger and larger and larger. where else does volleyball sell like bb & fb? (ha ha, i said bb ) is the tv advertising dollar as golden in other countries as it is in the US? nba, nfl, and mlb teams make more of their money from tv deals vs. merchandising? no? why wouldnt the US host a WC here?

So, I just saw an AKC dog show on ESPN. Maybe volleyball announcers need to talk like these doggy show announcers to draw a crowd?

Volleyball is big in China because the average person loves to watch it and the team has history and national pride behind it. The crazy thing is volleyball doesn't sell in this country. People aren't running around in mock uniforms or all buying volleyball shoes. However, they are getting together with friends and playing on pavement with poor nets and torn up volleyballs. I think thats why China passes so well. They all learn to play vball on concrete which doesn't exactly allow you to dive...you have to learn footwork and anticipation.
As far as advertising goes, CCTV5 runs all the matches and they show maybe 2 commercials over and over during timeouts...other than that, no other advertising during a match.
As to why the US wouldn't hold a WC on american soil? I don't know. I know it would be going out on a limb, but if they could do it right and well, I could really see it helping the sport to grow and ultimately get more respect.

Volleyball, (or a show about how hotel workers learn how to make beds, for that matter) could be on TV anytime if you could come up with the money to buy the air time.

I think the AKC would be great tv if they had announcers like Fred Willard (sp?) in Best in Show. I would watch then.

VB coverage on TV has another problem: they need to have better productions. The USC-Stanford match several weeks ago was the first telecast I've seen in 8 years or so that tried something different. More cameras, better replays.
I know it's not going to happen due to the costs, but TV really doesn't do the game justice. Not the way they televise it now. It's hard for ME to watch and I'm a fan.
