No. 4 USC Prepares For Another Pac-10 Showdown Against No. 6 UCLA
Both teams playing for possible No. 1 seed in upcoming NCAA Tournament.
The Facts
The No. 4 USC women's volleyball team (23-3, 12-3) -- winners of six national championships -- travels to No. 6 UCLA (25-3, 12-3) on Friday (Nov. 17) in a 7 p.m. match at Pauley Pavilion. The match will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis by Fox Sports Net with Jim Watson, Holly McPeak and Karch Kiraly calling the action. Five points for the Lexus Gauntlet standings will also be up for grabs with UCLA winning five points in a 3-1 win on Oct. 20 at the Lyon Center.
Week In Review
It was a good week for USC as the team recorded two 3-0 sweeps on the road at No. 2 Stanford and No. 12 California. The Women of Troy became the first team to record a 3-0 sweep at Stanford's Maples Pavilion since the 2003 USC squad did it on Oct. 17, 2003. Asia Kaczor, who earned Pac-10 Conference Player of the Week honors, had 26 kills and hit .500 on the night in front of a crowd of 3,997 fans. USC hit .315 in the match as four players registered double figures in digs.
Freshman setter Taylor Carico continued her strong campaign for freshman All-America honors with 49 assists, four kills, 10 digs and five block assists. Senior libero Debora Seilhamer had 18 digs and went over the 1,900 mark for career digs.
In the win at Cal, Kaczor added 23 kills for a total of 49 in two matches. Diane Copenhagen had 12 kills while Jessica Gysin added 10 kills. Seilhamer recorded 21 digs for the Women of Troy.
No. 6 UCLA Notes
UCLA is 25-3 overall and 12-3 on the season after a 3-1 win at No. 12 California and 3-1 loss at No. 2 Stanford last weekend. Andy Banachowski is 1,029-269 in his 40th season at UCLA. Middle blocker Nana Meriwether leads the team with 385 kills (4.10 kpg) while hitting .469 and recording a 1.91 blocks-per-game average. USC leads the all-time series by a 47-40 margin. The Bruins' win on Oct. 20 at the Lyon Center snapped USC's 11-match win streak in the series..
