Its not just for the audience sake. Its fine when we had Kahumoku/Willoughby who can slam it for a kill with 2 big blockers waiting. Hawaii no longer has that luxury and that high outside offense aint gonna cut it with no goto for sure kill player. Take a peak at the top 5-6 teams in the nation right now. Its critical to have a solid Outside game. Mason and Houston totally have the potential to be those elite players (even right now!!), but they both get in funks occasionally and with no replacement, well, you've seen what happens. I don't expect that they'll run a gimmick offense with a frosh setter next season, but maybe the next year?

True. Shoji's style is high percentage, low error volleyball. While I agree with you that a quicker more intricate offense is more fun for the average fan, it is not necessarily high percentage volleyball. Besides, Dave's got one hell of a resume to back up his style. Its not just for the audience sake. Its fine when we had Kahumoku/Willoughby who can slam it for a kill with 2 big blockers waiting. Hawaii no longer has that luxury and that high outside offense aint gonna cut it with no goto for sure kill player. Again, since the Willoughby years, the offense actually HAS been quicker (just not as quick as you'd like or as intricate). In 04, there is no way that Boogaard and Arnott put away as many balls on the outside without the quicker, lower trajectory set that was used. In 05, they had hitters that PREFERRED a higher set (and attacked them better when higher). Now we are in 06 and the season started with very, very quick sets to the outside to Hittle and Houston against Pepperdine. But what we found out really quickly was that our passing sucked big wind and we couldn't reliably run the faster tempo sets. Right now, we should be happy that Houston and Mason HAVE been able to put away as many high and outside sets as they have. Next year's team looks to be GREATLY improved in the ball control area. But, I still don't expect too much of a change in the speed of the offense. However, Dave HAS been speeding up the offense ....it just reverts back to high and wide come tourney time for whatever reason.

Maybe Dave should have been with his team in the mainland drilling them on the basics of volleyball instead of watching his son play.
