DENTON, Texas – The Sun Belt Conference’s volleyball youth was served Wednesday evening as the league announced its annual all-conference teams at an awards ceremony held prior to Thursday’s start of the Johnny Carino’s Volleyball Championship.
Two freshmen, seven sophomores, and five juniors made and combined to makeup the sixteen players selected to the two all-conference teams.
Western Kentucky’s sophomore sensation Megan Argabright highlighted the league’s first team all-conference as she was selected as the conference’s player of the year. The Louisville native was twice named the Sun Belt Player of the Week during the conference season.
New Orleans senior Jayne Duncan earned the league’s Defensive Player of the Year honors. The defensive specialist also earned the award following the 2004 season.
Members of the upstart Florida International squad also received three special awards. Yarimar Rosa earned Freshman of the Year Honors after she burst onto the Sun Belt scene.
Keila Oliveira was named the league’s Newcomer of the Year and Golden Panther head coach Danijela Tomic was named the conference’s Coach of the Year.
Middle Tennessee, FIU and WKU led all teams with three members chosen to the all-conference teams.
The 2006 Johnny Carino’s Sun Belt Championship is set for action Thursday through Saturday at the Mean Green Volleyball Complex on the campus of North Texas. All games can be viewed via web streaming on the Sun Belt’s website, www.sunbeltsports.org.
