Another ugly one, but heck, I remember when they used to play good and lose 3-1. Now they play not soooo great and win 3-1. Probably sealed up a tourney berth. For some reason Tech really gives us problems!
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State got 17 kills and five block assists from Lauren Cummings to rally after dropping the first game and defeat Texas Tech, 3-1 (25-30, 30-20, 30-26, 30-25), on Wednesday night in front of 1,165 spectators at Hilton Coliseum.
With the win, Iowa State improves to 19-8 overall and 11-6 in Big 12 action. The Red Raiders drop to 11-15 overall and 4-13 in conference play.
The Cyclones came out sluggish, dropping the first game, 30-25, behind a .167 hitting percentage before rallying to win the next three games.
“We didn’t quite find our groove tonight,” said Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson. “They did a great job of defending Erin (Boeve) tonight. Katie (Jessen) and Jesse (Klein) stepped up for us. Those two were good tonight.”
Jessen and Klein joined Cummings in double-figures with 16 and 13 kills, respectively. Nicole Lorenzen also reached double-figures with 11 kills.
The Red Raiders limited Erin Boeve to a season-low five kills in the match. She also had just five kills against UC Irvine in a sweep by Iowa State.
The Cyclones were solid defensively and from behind the service line. ISU had eight service aces, 63 digs and 15.5 blocks on the night. Katie Churm had 20 digs to pace the Cyclones, while freshman Kaylee Manns had 13 to go along with her 57 assists. Jessen and Laura Cady also reached double-figures with 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
As a team, ISU hit .260 and held the Red Raiders to a .145 hitting percentage.
The first two games weren’t very competitive, as the winning team led the entire way. In the first game, Texas Tech never trailed en route to a 30-25 win. The second game was all Iowa State as the Cyclones evened up the match at 1-1 with a 30-20 win.
The Cyclones led much of the third game, but Texas Tech took a lead at 10-9. Iowa State snatched it back at 13-12 and cruised to a 30-26 win.
The deciding fourth game was controlled by Texas Tech until the Cyclones scored three straight to push their lead to 14-10. The Cyclones never trailed again in extending their school-record with the 11th Big 12 win of the season.
Iowa State will take to the road for a pair of Big 12 matches. The Cyclones will face No. 8 Texas in Austin on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. before heading to Oklahoma for a Tuesday match against the No. 14 Sooners.
