Did Gamova get "homered" on this one or what! Yes they have other good players, but who is the go to player when things get tough and you've got to have the point or a block. She was #4 in scoring and with all those swings still was #12 in spiking, wound up #3 in blocking. Every match I watched she was just dominating out there. Oh well.

I think either Sokolova or Gamova should have got MVP. I was not happy with this one but not too surprised... Tourney in Japan after all, oh well...

I believe that internationally all awards are based on statistics. I could be wrong, but I believe that this is the case.

I believe that internationally all awards are based on statistics. I could be wrong, but I believe that this is the case. After having checked, this is true for all awards except MVP. I don't know the criteria for the MVP award at the international level. Perhaps politics comes in to play. Who knows?

I too, find it strange that the MVP was selected out of a 6th place team. According to the FIVB news article, the MVP was determined from some kind of (fan?) voting and FIVB committee.

That seems screwy if fans voting has an impact on the MVP award. This isn't American Idol or Dancing w/ the Celebrities. That's a lot of money at stake. I wonder if in the voting they use both stats and opinion. For example, if everyone knows that Italy's libero passes every ball on a dime and therefore they hardly serve her (but she still picks up great digs), does that affect the voting?
