That's the CIF 2nd round and there might be one I want to see....... Just kidding. Haven't missed a Cal home match since '99. I'll be there with camera in tow. I got this one last season on Senior Night: I don't know - there's just something amusing about wearing a bow around the neck.

Three teams losing four-year starting setters ... Cal, Hawaii, Washington ... Each of them were quite important to the respective programs. Who does Cal have in the wings to take over the reins from Sam Carter?

Who does Cal have in the wings to take over the reins from Sam Carter? Bryte Nielson will be a junior next season and occasionally spells Sam. However - she'll likely get some stiff competition from freshman Carli Lloyd, who's a 5'11" setter of Fallbrook HS and Epic VBC in the San Diego area.

Do you think Nielson is comparable to Sam or will there be much of a drop off? Is Lloyd that good that you feel she may push Nielson for a starting position even though Nielson has been in the program for two years?

I don't know if it's fair to compare her to Sam because Sam was such a special player at Cal for four years. I do think Nielson is a legitimate D-I setter out of a 5-1, and she probably could have started four years somewhere else but wanted to come to Cal. I don't know if she's ready right away because I haven't seen Lloyd play. Someone sent me a photo of her playing club so I could put it up on a photo hosting site. I think John Tawa's description was that she "plays high", which is pretty evident in the following photo: Lloyd was on the all-tournament team of the JO 18 Open division last club season. I think that's a pretty good sign, since the names read off like a laundry list of the most coveted recruits of the 2006/7/8 recruiting classes. www.usavolleyball.org/juniors/06_Girls/06gjo_18.asp

I always have problems when I am assigned to play middle. I can't seem to keep my eyes open on most plays when I go up for a block. If I know the opponent doesn't hit hard then I have no problem, but I can't seem to get the mental hurdle of watching the hitter so I can position the block better. Any hints?

For some reason I believe Carli Lloyd is left handed, saw her in a picture or whatever; if so, and Nielsen is also, Cal could try something completely different and do a classic 6-2, leaving them both in opposite each other; shades of Minnesota a few years ago. With the versatility of Beck and Orchard, who have both played left, you could have hitters flying all over the place. Just kidding, but it would be nice to see Cal try something different to escape the 5th to 6th place routine in the Pac 10.

They had Candace McNamee who could have been a full-time hitter. They used a variety of 2nd setters including Caity Noonan and Astrid Gonzalez. Once McNamee was sidelined for a weekend and they used Alicia Perry as a hitter/setter, when she racked up two triple-doubles along with Pac-10 PotW. However - that was back when they were more worried about staying out of last place in the Pac-10.
