Of all the great things Mary has done at UF, creating this tradition is the best of all. Athletes and staff members of the University of Florida volleyball team made their annual visit to the pediatric ward at Shands Children's Hospital and Shands at Alachua General Hospital on Thursday just in time to lift the spirits of children and families in time for the holidays. In a tradition that dates to 1993, the Gator volleyball team visited the children of the pediatric ward with all kinds of goodies in stow. Members of the team put smiles on the faces of the children as they played games and tossed out an assortment of Gator items – t-shirts, mini-volleyballs and nylon backpacks to name just a few. Florida first started visiting Shands in 1993 and has turned that initial event into a Thanksgiving holiday tradition. With the exception of the past two seasons when the Gators were forced to visit a day early because of travel, UF has visited Shands on Thanksgiving Day every year since 1993.
