Oguh, Simpson Pace No. 21 Aggies in Title Match Courtesy: New Mexico State University Release: 11/24/2006 RENO, Nev. – Middle hitter junior Kim Oguh and sophomore Amber Simpson lead the No. 21 New Mexico State volleyball team in the WAC Tournament Championship match, Friday, Nov. 24, at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno, Nev. Oguh had a team-high 14 kills while Simpson added 12.
The Aggies (33-3) fell to No. 12 Hawai’i (26-5) in four-games, 27-30, 20-30, 31-29, 22-30. Simpson, Oguh and senior setter Jackie Choi were named to the all-tournament team.
Head coach Mike Jordan said he was pleased with Choi, Oguh and Simpson’s selection to the all-tournament team but Aggies had a few miscues.
“They played really well,” he said. “They deserved that honor. I’m proud of them.
“We didn’t ball-handle as well as we needed to. Hawai’i played well and blocked well. I think there are few teams that are going to block better than Hawai’i.”
Offensively, junior outside hitter Anna Callis and senior outside hitter Alice Borden contributed nine kills each, while Choi had eight kills and a match-high 49 assists. Freshman outside hitter Krista Altermatt had a career night with six kills.
Sophomore defensive specialist Krystal Torres had a match-high 16 digs as junior defensive specialist Jordan Bostic added nine.
In the first game, the Aggies had control early after a 7-0 run that included a pair of senior outside hitter Tanya Allen kills. NMSU’s largest lead was five but Hawai’i went on a 5-0 point rally. Simpson led the Aggies with a game-high five kills while Allen added four. Oguh and Borden also contributed with three kills apiece as Choi provided 16 assists. Torres paced NMSU with a game-high nine digs to give the Aggies a 21-11 advantage.
The Aggies took command of game two from the tip and posted an early five-point lead but it wasn’t enough as the Rainbow Wahine answered. Oguh paced the team with four kills in the frame while Choi, Allen and Simpson tallied a pair each. In the third game, Callis was a huge factor with six kills. Both Choi and Simpson added to the effort with three kills. The final game saw Hawai’i post an early lead that the Aggies didn’t recover from but Oguh was solid with five kills in the frame.
New Mexico State now awaits the NCAA Tournament Selection Show, Sunday, Nov. 26, to learn where and when they play.
