ISU Celebrates Senior Day With 3-2 Win
AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State volleyball team celebrated Senior Day with a thrilling 3-2 (30-27, 24-30, 30-28, 29-31, 15-9) victory over Colorado Saturday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum. It was the regular season finale for both schools.
With the win, Iowa State improves to 20-10 overall and 12-8 in conference play, clinching a tie for fourth place in the Big 12. Colorado drops to 16-11 overall and 12-8 in the conference.
What has been the norm all year, the Cyclone seniors each had a major impact on the Cyclones’ 20th win of the season, the most since 1995. Nicole Lorenzen set a career-high and matched fellow senior Katie Churm with 26 digs. Jessica Klein and Katie Jessen capped off their home career with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
“It was awesome to come out here and get a win for our seniors,” said Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson. “They have worked hard all season. We get an amazing amount of leadership from them. They really helped bring this program back to Iowa State.”
The Cyclones, who struggled offensively with just a .135 hitting percentage, found their success on the defensive end. ISU had a season-high 24.5 blocks and 95 digs en route to its second win over Colorado this season.
“Offensively, it was not one of our best performances,” said Johnson. “But we give credit to Colorado, because they did a lot of good things.”
Erin Boeve led ISU in blocking, recording two solo stuffs and 11 block assists. The junior broke the career record for block assists when she teamed with Jessen to stuff back the 355th block assist of her career, surpassing Vicki Seliger’s former mark of 354. Boeve also tied for the match-high with 17 kills, equaling CU’s Mallori Gibson.
Klein added seven block assists and Lauren Cummings had a solo block and eight block assists to go with her 16 kills.
Freshman Kaylee Manns joined the record-setting performance by becoming the school’s single-season leader for assists. The Topeka, Kan., native now has 1,359 assists on the season, recording 59 assists and 14 digs in the match.
The Cyclones got off to a quick start, capturing a 30-27 game one win. Colorado bounced back though, downing the Cyclones in impressive fashion in game two, 30-24.
The third game was one of the most impressive of the season for the Cyclones. After ISU raced out to a 13-7, the Buffaloes scored 13 straight points behind the serve of Lara Bossow. The Cyclones showed their resiliency, trailing 19-13. ISU battled back to finally draw even at 28-28. The Cyclones went on to score the next two points and take the game 30-28.
Iowa State led most of game four, but back-to-back kills by Lauren Schaefer and Bossow gave the Buffaloes the 31-29 win.
The Cyclones left no doubt in the fifth game, cruising to a 15-9 win behind a .353 hitting percentage. ISU limited Colorado to just a .080 hitting efficiency in the decisive fifth game.
Now the Cyclones will sit and wait as the NCAA Selection Show will be held Sunday at 2 p.m.
“It has been over 10 years since we have been invited,” said Johnson. “We are anticipating the selection and it is going to be an exciting time.”
The NCAA Selection Show will be Sunday at 2 p.m. CT on ESPNews. The show will be broadcast locally Mediacom Connnections channel 22, and on channel 210 for Mediacom Digital Cable subscribers.
