This was from the Daily Trojan Online. I don't know if anyone else saw this, thought it was interesting.
There have been rumblings within the athletic department that USC will change their men's volleyball coach next season as second-year coach Turhan Douglas seems to be having as much success on the court and off the court with his players as Pat Powers did before he "resigned" after alienating himself from much of the team during a 6-22 campaign in 2002.
Douglas, who was the coach at Pierce Junior College before becoming an assistant under Powers, hasn't been able to turn around the program since taking over, guiding the Trojans to a 6-25 mark last season, a USC record for losses, and is on pace to lead them to a 6-23 record this season.
Senior opposite hitter Ian Gallagher expressed his anger over the situation when he lashed out at his coach and teammates in an article in the Daily Trojan last week. He later said he was misquoted or that the quotes were taken out of context, or whatever the company line is this week.

That would be a shame if they made the move this soon after Douglas took over. I think Douglas is a pretty good coach, and all around good guy. It would be nice to see USC give him a chance to see what he can do with a couple classes of his own players. He is still dealing with a lot of stuff that was left to him from the Powers era, and it doesnt seem right to put the blame on him for those issues.

VBbeast is right. He is still dealing with leftovers. I think he has done a good job this year. They beat Northridge, Irvine, Stanford, Pacific, UC San Diego, and Lewis and went 5 with a few teams including Pepperdine. IMO they have played much better this year than last year and prior. The games I have seen this year showed a lot of character and heart. These guys played hard and they got a few upsets along the way. Once his recruiting kicks in you should see more improvement as well. IMO they should give him more time . . .

I also think two years is too soon! He needs time to implement his system. I say we give him couple more years at least and then see how he's doing.
I forget, who was there before Pat Powers and how long was he there for? Also, how long was Powers there?

I cannot remember off the top of my head who was there prior to Pat Powers. This is from USC's website . . . I wonder if history will repeat itself (with BYU):
Douglas, 33, replaced Pat Powers, who resigned in April of 2002 after 6 seasons at USC. The Trojans were 6-22 overall in 2002 and finished 11th in the 12-team Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
Douglas already had exhibited his head coaching ability at USC. When Powers missed USC’s home match against BYU in 2001 to be with his ill mother, Douglas stepped in and directed the Trojans to a 3-1 upset over the top-ranked, undefeated Cougars.

Wow! Wouldn't that be interesting! ;D
At times, they definitely have played teams tough this season and pulled off some surprising upsets. However, BYU seems pretty focused.

In the archive area on USC's website they have a lot of history. Here is seasonal information including head coach:

You know, it doesn't seem like they have had longevity with anyone really. That seems somewhat strange to me given their history in the sport.
A lot of coaches have been with their programs 10-15 years and mostly longer.
By the way, I forgot to says thanks for that information Rocky!!!

I agree. But it seems like the type of school where you had better perform or there is someone waiting in the wings. I know it is that way with football. I used to know a USC football coach that was let go. As long as they were winning it was great. They give the coaches a lot of perks (help with loans on housing for one) but as soon as the job was gone they had I think 60 days to find another home, new loan, or move. Douglas is already established in the area. These were people that were moved here from back east somewhere. They finished out the school year and moved somewhere else because of a new coaching job.

Turhan's recruiting hands were completely tied for over a year until his administration finally "got it" and finally changed his "interim" title into a "head coach" title. What quality recruit would opt to play for a coach who couldn't credibly promise anything beyond his then one year contract when they have other great options from other teams? Even if he had been lucky, those recruits in those days would be freshmen this year at best, and there aren't too many freshmen that play, let alone play with enough impact to turn an entire problematic program around. The SC administration made a blunder (IMO) in waffling on the head coach decision in replacing Powers for over a year. Douglas is playing the hand he was dealt. The SC team has improved during the course of the year, and that's at least what anyone should expect.
SC also recruits from a much smaller pool of talent since the school is so expensive and the players have to be able to afford the tuition.

Hopefully their AD realizes the recruiting limitations and gives Douglas more of a chance to prove himself.

If you know Ian Gallagher, and you know what Ian Gallagher's teammates think of Ian Gallagher, you would know not to take his words too close to heart.
In the same Daily Trojan article he compared himself to the other outsides, Joao Grangiero and Blake Tippett, saying that they MAY be better passers than he is but he is definitely a better blocker. He's completely ego-driven, and if he doesn't think Turhan is a competent coach because he's not getting enough playing time, he's out of his mind.
Keep Turhan!
