I dont think Tan will be Libero. It seems to me that Cowles will become that role and Tan will be a DS again. Tan is a good digger, but she isnt always in position. She often moves in too close and gets burned on the back line. Ruffda is right though, its whoever can pass that will get the job.

What about Chin? Any role on defense for her next year?

That depends on Cowles, too, probably.
I was kind of surprised KC wasn't the first DS off the bench (after Tan) this year, especially after the opening weekends.
There's also supposed to be an additional walk-on or two...

I'm always amazed when people send me IMs of insider Gopher news. It's funny because I can't/won't do anything with said info. It's a very lonely job I have of being people's trustee.

I knew this would happen. Several peeps sent me IMs asking me for Gopher insider info. My lips are sealed.
I'm not saying "I know something you don't know...blah blah blah..." because I don't even know if the info I have is valid. It's just that I don't actively seek out such info but they come to me by peeps volunteering said info to my inbox. I always wonder if some peeps are trying to set me up, to see if I would blab it all over.
Nope. That's not me. What goes in my inbox, stays in my inbox.
Peeps come to me ato confess. I'm like a priest. Not the pedophile molester kind. The good kind.

Tan. Then Wilbur would serve for Nelson occasionally. That was usually as deep as they'd go.
(Tan served for Roehrig. Peniata served for Jones and came in for Jones and Nelson.)

That's another issue with the 2007 Gophers: Assuming Roehrig starts on the left or the right, they're going to need to sub for her in the backrow. Libero, whoever it is, will probably still sub for the middles, with Jones probably serving. So they'll only have subs for ONE of the other two OHs. Someone needs to play all the way around and even then they could run out of subs.
Who's it going to be? KVodt, Hagerty or Dieter?

2003 Gophers let me down when they lost to USC. 2004 Gophers let me down when they lost to Stanford. 2005 Gophers is a blur. 2006 Gophers let me down when they lost to Nebraska.

Ruffda's point (re U) is well taken. Bowman and Cumpston were so valuable because they didn't have to rotate out. It is not apparent who of the current players is versatile enough to do that other than Hartmann. My guess is that Katie V will give it a go.

Deiter and Gibbemeyer are two very composed, mature and confident young ladies. Not a lot of rattling of the nerves from these two. I see them both stepping right in from day one.
The speed of the game is obviously different but I don't think it will be too hard of a transition for them.
It is obvious from watching them play that they are two of the best we'll see in Gopher uniforms ever. Ok, so I can't see the future but that's what I'm thinking about these two. Cowles is the sleeper in the class. She could ultimately prove to be the best of the 3 from NL. I think she could even see time all the way around instead of just at libero. Smart, smart player of a girl. Peniata-like you might say.
Here's how I see the line-up!
Hartmann (S) Jones (M2) Gibbemeyer (M1) Deiter (OH2) Roehrig (OH1) Schmidt (RS) Cowles (L) Tan (DS)
I don't really know if I think Schmidt could be the starting RS but it might help to be able to run a faster offense on that side and she'd give the option of running the back one and slide with her training at MB. I also think that the faster you get the ball out of Hartmann's hands the better chance there won't be a ball handling error. I like the girl and she certainly improved this year but it's hard for me to understand that someone with all those reps can't put up a prettier ball for her hitters.
The more likely scenario is that Kyla will be RS and Vatterodt will be the OH but I like Kyla's ability to terminate the ball better and Kelly is a tall drink of water that could block just fine on the right. Kelly would also be quicker to the ball if the setter has to dig the first one up. Can you all picture Kyla running after an errant pass from Rachel and trying to get a nice set out of it? I don't think that's a viable option. There is the MB option of setting the 2nd ball though, so I can still see it.
It'll be a fun season. In the mean time I look forward to watching our soon to be freshmen at the NL qualifier and, of course, at the championships since they're in Minneapolis this year. We are very lucky to be able to see so much talent 2 times around this year. Especially since many teams we won't see at the qualifier will be at the season ending championships.
Thanks for starting this post JHAM. It's fun to speculate in this way. I think there are many great options for our Gophers next year. How lucky we are to continue to have such great talent enter the program each season. Actually, it's been better and better talent each year for the last 10 years. Keep on goin' "Herbert". I love that the screen flashed his name misspelled like this before the MN/NE match. Hilarious!

I'll be amazed if Hagerty isn't a starter next year...
If she isn't, I sure hope it's because Dieter and KVodt are playing great. I just don't see her not making huge strides in the offseason.

Hagerty's power is impressive. I do think she could be playing many minutes next season. Rachel just needs to push the set out to the pin. When Rachelle has to take a few steps into the court to chase after a set she gets lazy and tries to strong arm the ball instead of taking a big step approach and then hammering.
Unless Rachel becomes more consistent I don't see Rachelle starting because of her high error game. Deiter can hit a set from the 10 foot line down on the 10 foot line on the opponents side of the court. It's a thing of beauty to see what she can do with the angles of the court. She may respond better to the inconsistent setting of our lovely little Rachel.
However, for the pure excitement of seeing the big time, hammer like kills of Hagerty I'd love to see Rachel become consistent. I love what a statement kill does to the opposing team. Totally deflating. That's the type of player Hagerty could become. Lethal. Intimidating. With the right setter.
Gophers are going to be fun once again. I love this team.

I will miss the departing seniors terribly, but am looking forward to next years season.
I will miss Meredith's smile that she would flash after a block or a kill.
I think the departure of Peniata and Bowman will hurt. Not just the passing and serve receiving that those two did, but their overall play. Those two girls were solid all around players. Passing, setting, defense, hitting, they did it all. The had the highest volleyball IQ I have seen. That Marci was so smart. Loved her over on two's. Both players would make excellent beach players. Very smart. Also very mentally tough. Nothing shook either one of them. More than anything else, I loved and appreciated that. I had complete confidence with the ball in either of their hands.
Looking forward to Jessy Jones senior year. Cant believe she only has one more year left. I really wish her and Rachael could connect better in the middle. It just isn't happening. Not sure what the deal is, Hartman could connect with Meredith, but just doesn't seem to be working well with Jessy. Is it because she is so athletic? She has long limbs and can jump out of the gym, I just wish they could connect better. So much talent there with Jessy, and it doesn't seem that Hartman is doing much to expose that. Just my thought.
