Actually, Schneider received a scholarship for this year. I thought she had an academic scholarship?

I am amazed at how volatile some people can get. Wow.

So, 8 months later, here we are. The drama: *Will Schmidt hold off Gibbemeyer for a starting MB position? *Will Hartmann be kept in bubble-wrap off the court? (Schneider's the walk-on.) *Who will be the libero and first DS off the bench? *Who will win the OH and opposite spots? *How will the team be affected by Boos's departure? *Will Jones reach her full potential (or close to it) in her senior year? *Will Gorf spill his drink again this year, keeping the streak intact? Stay tuned. Updated roster: www.gophersports.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=8400&KEY=&SPID=3301&SPSID=38658I think Gibb is a starter. But is she M1 or M2? I'm leaning M1. I think Vatterodt and Roehrig are OH with Hagerty starting at opposite. I would expect Vatterodt to play the full rotation. Depending on Vatterodt's and Hagerty's performance, we could see Dieter step in at one of those positions, and possibly Schmidt at RS. Tan is libero. Cowles isn't there yet. I also think Dieter could be a DS if she isn't playing front row, which would give us a back row attack and a way to easily rotate her all-the-way around if the others aren't holding their own. Cowles would be the other DS. However, I wasn't really impressed w/ her passing and D at Nationals. My guess is that these three frosh will find lots of time on the court. I don't think any of the other DS/Ls will see much playing time. This youth has too much upside to not get them on the floor, whereas the others have had their chances. I think we will be fine. We are all expecting Gibb to make a big impact, but I think Dieter could as well. I also think our Juniors -- Vatterodt, Roehrig, Hartmann -- will be big. It's time for Hartmann to live up to her potential, which she is more than capable of, and I think we saw glimpses of Vatterodt last year that we'll see a lot more of this year. Jones.....I think she will be a lot like last year, but hit at a higher percentage. Blocking will remain stellar. But I don't see her at M1. She can't run a slide.

I also was not impressed with Cowles at JO's. Although she did play better at the NLQ. Maybe just not her weekend.
Gibbemeyer will more than likely be the M1. She can run all the plays and is probably the best blocker in her class.
Jones will have a great year. Rachel will actually set her high enough so she can put some balls down but it will be in front of the setter, not behind, as others have commented.
"The Hurt" will be All Big 10! We might even see her in the back row. She played great there in the Spring.
Tan at Libero seems obvious to me. I love her serve as well as both Fallon and Wilber's. They could both see some time back there.
I hope all our OH's have worked hard knowing that Dieter is capable of snatching their starting jobs away. I hope her hand has healed appropriately to make her a contender early this season. I'd love to see Gibb and Dieter on the court against Klineman when Stanford comes to town.
Who's going to the Gopher's meet and greet on Friday? JHAM and I will be there acting like little school girls I'm sure.

For the meet-and-greet, will they wear their unis or will they show up casual w/ flip-flops?

It doesn't surprise me that there will be that many. We are going early to watch more of the practice than just the last hour. Probably be there around 4pm to get in as much fix as possible. We're freaks obviously!

Some observations from today's practice:
*I don't recall if anyone's mentioned yet that Adam Beamer is the volunteer assistant this year? A great move, imo.
*No one's talking about Roysland. She continues to impress me.
*Caitlin Schneider didn't look like a walk-on setter today, let alone a walk-on setter who wasn't even setting for her JO team. I still think Rachel needs to be kept in bubble-wrap, but the backup's much better than people probably think.
*Dieter still has her hand wrapped, but she was doing everything, even hitting. Hagerty is still being held back (off-season shoulder surgery), but she was playing -- and must be getting close.
*The frosh did fine.
Mike's going to have a lot of talent this year. Aside from Hartmann, Jones and Tan, I'd guess the rest of the lineup is up in the air. Roehrig and Vatterrodt have really made huge strides over the Spring/Summer and Kelly Schmidt can't be counted out.

I feel like the mobility of Roehrig and Haggerty make them less than desireable as a "go to" players that the gophers have seen in the past at the OH position. Their defensive abilities off the net are a liability. As I've said before, Tan has the job going into the season. It is hers to lose though to either Cowles or Chin. Hartmann improved by leaps and bounds between in fresh and soph year....who knows whats ahead of her for this year. Lets hope it involves clean setting and helping hone up and coming hitters. Gibbemeyer will be stellar to watch this year in the middle. She could be the best middle the gophers have ever seen.
I cant wait for the season to start!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the report from the 1st practice, can't wait until Friday when I can see them scrimmage. Competition is good for the players and will make them work harder to earn a starting position. If everyone recalls Cumpston did not play much during the first part of 2006 and earned her starting position - Katie V started against Nebraska at their tourney. I could see that happening in 2007 as well, especially at the OH and OPP positions.

Oh and since I started this thread in Dec I have changed my position on libero - I think no one that is listed as a DS on the Gopher's roster can beat out Tann. She will be our libero for 2007.

If you can't wait until Friday, go tomorrow. I forget what the AM time is, 9? 930? But they start at 330 in the afternoon.
Bring a fan.
