This is the first final four I have attended and I thought that a third place match would have been really fun to see. I am guessing the players would enjoy it as well. It would also guarantee all teams who make the final four an opportunity to participate in two more matches in the season win or lose.
What is everyone else's take on this proposition?

The NCAA abandoned third place matches a long, long time ago. I think the NIT basketball tournament still has a third place game.

What was the reason for abandoning a third place game?

What was the reason for abandoning a third place game? The last third place game in NCAA men's BB was Virginia beating Lousiana State in 1981. Apparently there used to be a third place game for each Regional too. www.ncaasports.com/basketball/mens/story/9033549It's a single elimination tournament. It's not a placement tournament like the Olympics, so I'm not sure what a third place contest would accomplish.

the ncaa got rid of the third place match a few years ago. there's no point in it. the players are still bummed (or pissed) that they lost two nights a go and no one really cares who wins the consolation game anyway. another factor is you would have the game prior to the championship game which could interfere with warm-up times and game flow of the championship game and no one wants that. for those reasons and a few others (i'm sure money came into play a bit) they got rid of it

I care. I am sure other fans care. I have always wondered why they did not play out to the top eight places. That would be so great. That way they would know exactly where they stood, in relation to each other. How great would that be as preparation for next year, for everyone. The players that have lost could have fun refocusing, working on next year, trying to hold their spot before the big recruits come on in. The seniors who never get on the court could play. I guess I just would personally love to see more games to decide the placement, rather than talk.

I don't see the point of making these student-athletes play unless they have a shot at the title.

So who would've win the 3rd place match this year? Last year? The year before? I would've loved to have seen what happened 2006: UW vs. UCLA 2005: Tennessee vs. Santa Clara 2004: USC vs. UW

The point of single elimination is to be eliminated after you lose once. So it doesn't make sense to change the rule at the end of the tournament and plus if I was playing and lost in the semis I would probably want to go home. Not play again.

no one wants to play again right away after they get that close to a national championship... most of the players and coaches would find little consolation in winning 3rd place ("if you ain't first, you're last..." Ricky Bobby...) plus, it makes one team LOSE TWICE, which would be even worse and more embarassing...

Saying that seniors who haven't played get to play, then that the game is good for seeding the next year is contradictory; those type of attitudes would lead to coaches with different agendas. I don't think anyone really likes to play in a consolation game.
