The label "All-American" has its origins in the mind of Caspar Whitney back in 1889 when he compiled a list of the top Ivy League football players. It was legitimized when Walter Camp, the father of American football, continued to select All-American teams. There is a dispute as to who really coined the term but it is undisputed that both Whitney and Camp collaborated to select the players. And back then, it was just Ivy League football players. Over the years, the label branched to other conferences beyond the Ivy League and to other sports.
It has nothing to do with whether the player was American or not. It's just a convenient name. Many non-Americans in ALL sports, not just volleyball, have been named All-Americans.
Doofs.
Thanks, in advance.

Isn't Pavan the 3rd non American All American?! There's plenty of them, all over the place from many American schools. Audrey DiPronio (now Flaugh), Gabrielle Jobst and Stacey Gordon were Ohio State University All Americans who are Canadians. I'm sure there is a 4th Canadian, I just can't remember her name.

Mary Ormsby, I think (she's a sports reporter for the Toronto Star).

FWIW, it is the All- America (as in the country where all NCAA teams are located) team NOT the All-America N team. Therefore, anyone regardless of whether they are an American or not can be All-America.

I've always been told that anyone from any of the Americas (North, South, Central) is considered an "American". That means Pavan qualifies.
