I see on the Weber St website that Coach Al Givens was named co-coach of the year in the Big Sky (along with the coach from Sac St). Not because they won the conference or anything, in fact, they barely made the conf tournament. However, it was a huge turnaround for the team, as they won their last 5 in a row or something like that to qualify.
Personally, I take credit for their success. If you look back in the archives, you will see that I mentioned that I saw Al and the team on their way to Sacramento to play Sac St in October. At the time, they were ranked 200 in Pablo. Here are their rankings in the weeks after our encounter
191 163 165 138 141 128 128 122
Nice climb up the rankings chart. I think the kids took to heart the advice I gave them at the baggage claim in Sacramento ("Have big hands, and penetrate!")
Al, you owe me one!

Weber State's Al Givens and EWU's coach, Wade Benson, shared the Big Sky co-coaching honors this year. EWU started off 0-5 in the Big Sky Conference (after playing a weaker pre-season schedule) and ended up finishing 10-6 and 3rd in the Big Sky Conference.
I talked to Wade after they had lost 6 matches in a row (they had lost to Gonzaga in their last pre-season match). He didn't seem angry only shocked and puzzled. He told me that he didn't blame the girls, that it was his problem as their coach to find a way to train and motivate his team back to a winning season. He was very motivating and inspirational with his young team (6 freshmen, 3 of them red shirted)
