I think that the coach at Miami has a bit of a grudge to share with UCSB. I won't go into it on the internet because I don't think that it would be appropriate but I would take this with the proverbial grain of salt..... The Miami coach is a bit of a work Pigskin U,,,,,,they have a volleyball team?

I bet they couldn't get anyone to apply for that job. Who would want to live in Santa Barbara? (the correct answer is - me and anyone else who has a brain.) It's not that simple, keystone. Head coaches salary low in a very high cost of living area. Even harder in many ways is that assistant coaches salaries are below a living wage for that area. Also, very small recruiting budget, even smaller travel budget (every UCSB road trip this year was within bus distance) and strong pressure from the athletic director to only recruit in state because of the extra cost of out of state/country scholarships. So yes, Santa Barbara is a dream spot to live, but the Athletic Department leaves a lot to be desired.

For all of this community's quirks, it is amazingly knowledgable.

She will never retire, she can't just walk her dogs on the beach all day long.

She will never retire, she can't just walk her dogs on the beach all day long. In defense of Kathy, she is one of the most knowledgeable coaches in the game. She trains players as well as anyone out there and no matter what her talent level is(and it has been down a bit the last couple of years) her teams are always very competitive.....unless my memory serves me badly didn't they have wins this year over Wisconsin and Pepperdine?? kathy may be a bit old school, but IMHO it is unfortunate that we don't have more coaches who hold the line on their principles and ethics like Kathy does instead of coaches who let some of these kids always get their way.....A BIG PROBLEM WITH THIS GENERATION based on my observations of hiring, training and firing young people from this generation who don't have a clue what a "good day's work" really is!

iPods and cell phone text messaging...the two biggest problems of this generation. It's time we ban them.

Kathy Gregory is an absolute giant in the world of volleyball. Her legacy on sand alone makes her one of the greats of the game. But she has added so much more in terms of coaching at the collegiate level. Few will ever be able to live up to the standards she has set.

I totally agree....a formidable opponent for any team, and a real warrior both on and off the court.....

Sadly, her coaching style (and Gimmillaro's as well) are less tolerated by today's athlete.

That's so true. Today's players come with today's parents and today's parents don't let go. Sorta like when you get married you marry the family too. Coaches today will have to look beyond the player and see if the parents will be a good fit!!!! ;D

Coaches today will have to look beyond the player and see if the parents will be a good fit!!!! ;D Fortunately all players are not like that....Ali Daley was that type of player.....couldn't cut the umbelical.....so sometimes when the parents are still calling the shots their kids don't know how to react and then they take the easy way out and just split.....a lot of that going on in today's world....sad.....but I still believe that there are plenty out there of a different mind-set.....time tells all!

Interesting comments on KG. Different perspectives than what is usually tossed around regarding her style, program, etc. I think that today's athletes are more aware of the power they wield in sports through the recruiting process, official visits, etc. So they are behaving more like football players and blue chip basketball players than female athletes of 15 years ago. Coaches who cannot adapt are destined to fail....all that being said, there is more wrong than right with any program when you have this many transfers in 2 seasons.
