Just found out some news: Head Coach Jim Barnes has just recieved a 3 year extension to his contract, keeping him at Baylor until 2009. Glad to hear this. He has the program moving in a great direction.
Also, Assistant Coach Geno Frugoli has just accepted the Head Coaching position at UMKC. Way to go Geno. I've enjoyed talking on occasion with Geno, he is a quality guy!

I also have talked with Geno and he seems like the kind of guy that could really move UMKC in a positive direction. As a Baylor supporter I got to say that Coach Barnes' extension is well deserved. He has done everything first class there since day 1. I've never seen a coach that seems to love the school and team so much. Those two made a good team- I bet Geno appreciates learning so much from Barnes and will be asking for plenty of advice up North! Congrats to both...

When a coach leaves it is not always because of something negative. Being a head coach seems like a step forward for geno- from what I understand we probably shouldn't read anymore into it.

I was just giving Beartwatch a hard time. I thought maybe that's why the coach left, cause Bearwatch was bothering him.

Any news on who Jim is looking at for an assistant? I heard that he may have had someone lined up in case Geno got the job.

I'm not privvy to that kind of information but I'm sure many are contacting him now. I was at the Womens Basketball game last night that had over 6,000 in attendance on a cold, rainy night. I saw him in the crowd. He's probably trying to figure out how to get all those blue wig people to his games:))

He has the program moving in a great direction. Am I reading this right? He got a 3-year extension to 2009, right? That means his current contract had already expired in 2006 - probably at the end of the season? Is this typical? I would think it would be tough talking to recruits in December if you there was any question you weren't going to be retained (which I'm guessing wasn't a consideration for Jim). Just struck me as a like odd. I think Jim's done a very nice job this year so it kind of surprises me that they wouldn't have got a contract deal down earlier - or maybe it was a done deal before and it was just announced now.

I think jims contract was through 2007. He got his extension a year early I hear. I was at the game too last night and saw geno and jim there. Unfortunately I had a upper deck seat trying to see around the blue wigs! Those old ladies should just be bald and embrace it like me. Anyway, classy move last night when they retired a former wbball jersey and let associate head bill brock (now at tx tech-who baylor played last night) be part of the ceremony. Just another first class gesture by baylor athletics.

I think jims contract was through 2007. He got his extension a year early I hear. That would make sense. When a coach is doing a good job, the schools often try to keep them tied-up/satisfied by working out a deal extension before the current one expires. Helps with recruiting too as it gives that vote of confidence from the administration to the current coaching staff. Congrats to Coach Barnes.

Replying to an inquiry posted above: Jim was Geno's top reference and helped him get the UMKC job (although it could've just as easily been a couple of other jobs where Geno was a top candidate after getting a strong push from Jim) and yes, Jim already had a "short list" of people willing to accept the position when Geno got a job. Now, you'll see Baylor advertise Geno's old position, but make no mistake about it that this is just a formality and Jim already has the position filled (just appeasing the "HR Gods").
