Good move by Iowa State.
Christy Johnson Gets Contract Extension
Affirming the unprecedented success of the Iowa State volleyball program under head coach Christy Johnson, Iowa State Senior Associate Athletics Director Dr. Calli Sanders announced Tuesday that Johnson has accepted a contract extension that runs through the 2011-12 season.
"We are very proud of the accomplishments of this team, particularly with the rapid progress they have made in the Big 12 ranks, their success at securing an NCAA bid, and winning their first-round match in just two years under Coach Johnson," said Sanders, the sports administrator for ISU volleyball. "We wanted to recognize the unparallelled success that Christy has brought to Iowa State volleyball and re-affirm our commitment to her and her staff as the team continues to thrive under her leadership."
Johnson, who had two years remaining on her initial contract, receives a three-year extension and a raise to $100,000 after leading ISU to its first NCAA Championship berth in more than 10 years. The extension includes a buyout clause and restructured incentives. Assistant coaches, Joe Lynch and Dawn Sullivan, also received raises.
"I am very honored to receive this contract extension," said Johnson. "Calli Sanders and Jamie Pollard have been incredibly supportive of Cyclone volleyball and this further demonstrates their committment to our staff and program. I love Iowa State and am very excited for the future of our program."
Johnson has led the Cyclones to a 37-26 overall record in two years, including a 23-17 mark in Big 12 play. Prior to her arrival, ISU was just 13-167 in Big 12 competition.
The Cyclones went 21-11 in 2006, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Championships with an impressive 3-0 win over UW-Milwaukee in the first round. ISU had a number of monumental wins on the season, snapping losing streaks of at least 15 matches to Kansas State, Texas A&M and Missouri. The Cyclones also defeated Colorado in Boulder for the first time since 1987 (18 matches) and beat the Aggies in College Station for the first time in school history.
Under the guidance of Johnson and her staff, Iowa State has established itself as one of the top defensive teams in the country. The Cyclones finished in the top-15 in the nation in blocks per game (3.30) and led the Big 12 in digs per game in conference matches (17.19) last season. Additionally, the Cyclones’ .229 hitting percentage in 2006 is second all-time in school history. Iowa State also had the third-most kills and third-most assists in school history.
It should come as no surprise that the success of the team under Johnson has also led to improved attendance at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones ranked in the top 40 nationally, averaging 1,011 fans per match, and had two of the top three crowds in school history in 2006. The Cyclones drew more than 2,000 fans twice last season (2,500 vs. Nebraska, 2,225 vs. UNI).
