California Baptist Crowned NAIA Men's Champion
Lancers win title despite not having a coach on the bench final two matches
4/17/2004 -WICHITA, Kan. - The California Baptist University men's volleyball team captured its third NAIA title in the program's sixth season on Saturday night. Despite being without CBU Coach Ryan McGuyre, the top-ranked and top-seeded Lancers defeated the host school, fifth-seed Newman, 30-21, 27-30, 30-23, 30-18, in the final of the NAIA/Tachikara National Invitational Tournament at Fugate Gymnasium in Wichita, Kan., on Saturday night.
McGuyre and his wife, Jennifer, are expecting their first child at any time. Jennifer began having contractions early Saturday morning, so McGuyre left Wichita on the first flight to Ontario on Saturday morning. As of the end of the match on Saturday evening, Jennifer had not yet delivered their baby.
In McGuyre's absence, sophomore Randy Sheffer (Riverside, Calif./Saddleback HS/Riverside CC), a team captain, took over most of the floor duties, including coordinating CBU's substitutions and rotations. Jason Miller, a CBU resident director and a former assistant coach for McGuyre, and CBU Athletic Director Doug Huckaby were on the bench in place of McGuyre.
"Coach (McGuyre) is a man of integrity and a guy we look up to," Sheffer said. "He couldn't be here, but we knew God was in control of the situation. I've never been in a situation like this, where I was playing and also coaching at such an important event, so to have it turn out this way is extremely rewarding."
Junior opposite Shaun Dyk (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS/North Carolina State) averaged 3.86 kills, 1.50 digs and 1.21 blocks per game and was named Tournament MVP. He had 15 kills, five digs and five blocks in the championship match.
"This is amazing," Dyk said. "The whole team worked so hard. I don't feel like an MVP. It was an entire team effort. We played together as one. Without Coach (McGuyre), it was tough, but with Randy and Jason helping out, it took the pressure off us. We just had too many threats to be stopped."
Junior setter Trevor Johnson (Cerritos, CA/Gahr HS) averaged 12.4 assists per game and also made the All-Tournament team. He had 58 assists in the final.
"I've been here three years, and we took third place two years in a row," Johnson said. "This feels like a monkey off my back. It's an amazing feeling. The guys played great tonight. We weathered all the storms. Without Coach (McGuyre), we knew we had to play together, and we had to listen to Randy and Jason. We played together, and that was the key."
Sophomore outside hitter Seidu Ajanako (Accra, Ghana) had a match-high 21 kills in the final. It's his second straight NAIA title, as he was part of Park University's championship team from a year ago before transferring to CBU.
The Lancers (24-3) ended the most successful season in school history with a team-record 24 victories. CBU finished 12-0 against NAIA competition and also defeated several elite NCAA teams.
In the final, CBU hit .358 (69-25-123) compared to Newman's .214 (52-27-117) and had a 10-6 blocking advantage.
Tied 13-13 in game one, the Lancers scored three straight points to take the lead for good. CBU scored seven of the last eight points in the game.
The Jets suffered a costly loss despite winning game two, as junior setter Tom Mendoza broke his hand while diving for a ball. Newman held an 18-16 lead at that point, yet still held on to win game two.
Without Mendoza, Newman's attack struggled in games three and four, while CBU's offense picked up. CBU hit .371 (19-6-35) and .556 (20-5-27), respectively, while Newman hit .188 (14-8-32) and .208 (10-5-24). Newman led only once in both games, at 1-0 in game three.
The Lancers began game four by taking a 6-0 lead, with freshman opposite Shamsu Awudu (Kukurantumi, Ghana) collecting three straight service aces. CBU had a double-digit lead at 15-5. On the second championship point, Johnson got a kill from the setter position to end it.
In Saturday morning's semifinal match, the Lancers defeated Lindenwood (Mo.), 30-20, 30-15, 25-30, 30-26. Awudu led the Lancers with 15 kills and a .565 (15-2-23) hitting percentage. Ajanako and Dyk each had 13 kills and Johnson had 42 assists.
The first two games were no problem for the Lancers, as they hit .500 (17-4-26) and .667 (15-1-21), respectively. Dyk had 10 kills on his first 10 attempts in the two games. A 7-1 run gave CBU a 13-8 lead in game one, and a 12-2 spurt gave the Lancers a 27-12 advantage in game two.
Game three was a different story, as Lindenwood went on an 8-1 run to go ahead 16-12. The Lancers tied the game at 21-21, but the Lions scored the next three points and went on to finish the game.
CBU rebounded early in game four, scoring seven of the first eight points as Awudu had two blocks and two service aces. CBU built a 10-point lead at 17-7 following back-to-back attack errors by Lindenwood. The Lions slowly got back into the game, but couldn't get any closer than three points, and the Lancers ended the match on a block by Dyk and junior middle blocker Sergio Rose (Curitiba, Brazil).
