Hey everyone! I was just wondering what different schools do or have done at games when there are breaks, such as halftime and timeouts. We always do some kind of rubber chicken toss or dance for dinner, but what other stuff happens around the nation? I am curious to know what Nebraska does in partiulur.

Tossing burritos into the stands. After a while, they figured out that it was better if they were wrapped in plastic due to the inevitable drops.

T-Shirts for Aces. Hotdogs for "good points" in game three Volley-bowling (try to roll a VB through a small hole first from the length of the court and then about halfcourt) Used to toss bread for good points. I guess it depends on the sponsor that year. Games during the break between games #2 and #3. Some sort of serving contest is usually done. Favorite is two teams. Blindfold one, spin them around and then have the serve to their teammate who has a ball cart. They have to catch the ball in the cart. Pretty funny, but team that goes second almost always wins as they see the errors of the first team and correct them.

How's that rubber chicken dance go?
I'm partial to Scrabble matches. It can get tense.

At the baseball team i work for i was always a fan of the dizzy bat race, because somebody usually fell over, and that's always funny. It's probably not a good idea on a hard surface like a volleyball court though.
I always prefered things that are intersting to watch and see who will win, like 2 college kids doing the big sumo suit things, instead of things like a little 4 year old racing the mascot.
Some places do things where they split the crowd in half, and each half is represented by one team (or person). The crowd half of the winning team get's T-shirts shot into it. Or if it's something with more than two teams / people (like a race), you can divide the crowd up even more and give out prizes. It makes it more interesting for the crowd because they have something at stake.

For volleyball we do the follwing plus a few I can't think of: A t-shirt is thrown out for every Gator Ace. Musical Chairs Burrito Sling Shot: A person slings shirts wrapped in foil (to look like Chipotle burritos) to their partener...the team who catches the most wins Chipotle burrito coupons. Gator grabber: Small rubber volleyballs are put on the floor and a person has to find them while blindfolded. They are different colors signifying different dollar amounts and afterwards all the ones you collect are added up and you get that much cash. Dance For Dinner: Discontinued (supposably because the same guy always won. They'd play music, people in the stand dance, winner gets burrito coupons. Wendy's Serve And Win: People line up and serve the ball over the net (one person at a time) and try to hit one of several targets that have prizes on them (Blockbuster gift card, restaraunt gift card, etc.) Its calls Wendy's Serve And Win because if you don't hit a target you get a free Wendy's frosty.

Timeouts are generally too short to do anything but have the band play something. I think they announce the winner of the trivial context, introduce any groups that are visiting, etc. during timeouts. At really big matches there may be a dance team, or someone in the crowd may start a cheer, but it's hard to do anything structured in a minute and a half. Husky VB Fan didn't mention some of the other games held during the break between games 2 and 3. Such as relay races. Yes, Chance, I've seen contestants spin around a bat and then try to run while dizzy (no injuries so far). I've also seen people race to unroll a frozen T-shirt or race while holding a large ball between their knees. Just about anything physical and potentially embarrassing will work to amuse fans. For a big match the crowd has also judged signs made by some of the younger fans....

This is not correct. What they do is boring but they do have serving for T-shirts where there are about 20 sponsored T-shirts on the opposite court and as many people go through the line as possible during the games 2-3 break. ALL of the t-shirts are won, even if people at the opposite end have to run and catch the served ball towards the end of the time period. They also throw out T-shirts after each Ace.

So why don't they do stuff like the women running through the ESPN offices with a T-shirt gun in their commercials. They were shooting out light blue dress shirts.

Another one I forgot is "Win Free Tuition". They call out a random student number and if that person is there they get free tuition for a quarter. I keep waiting for one of the team members to look up and say "Hey, that's me" I don't think anyone has ever won this one. Also, they have a free drawing for a volleyball signed by the entire team. Our family has won that one three times over the years. They switched from mini-balls to real balls a few years ago. The real balls are much nicer. Also, the ink on the mini-ball from a few years ago is really hard to read now, but the newer balls are doing just fine. I used to do real well on knowing the seat that was most likely to get t-shirts thrown to it (we won a LOT of t-shirts over the years) but that is now in the reserved section and one of the parents has it. I have a book written by the former coach at Indiana State that is really good on volleyball promotions. I think it was called "Volleyball Marketing" or something like that. Unfortunately, I am not sure where it is right now.

Oh I forgot my favorite one that they no longer do anymore. It was called "Can't Say Um" They would give a person a subject and they had to talk about it for 30 seconds without saying "um" Most people would lose within 5 seconds...it was great.

So why do we call the break between the second and third games "halftime"? That's only correct if a match ends up going 4 games. We should have our own volleyball term for it, not something we've borrowed from football/basketball.

But halves do not need to be equal. Aha!!
Man, I surprise myself sometimes with how smart I am. And what will prompt me to post.
