Stanford Releases 2007 Women's Volleyball Schedule
Cardinal will play 15 matches against top-25 teams.
Jan. 30, 2007
Stanford, Calif. - Stanford women's volleyball head coach John Dunning has announced the schedule for the upcoming 2007 volleyball season. The Cardinal squad, which advanced to the 2006 NCAA Championship match, is set to take on another one of the most challenging line-ups in the nation. Stanford will face 10 teams that finished last season ranked in the AVCA Top-25 and 13 teams that advanced to the 2006 NCAA Tournament.
The Cardinal kicks off the 2007 season on the road, heading to Long Beach State for the season-opener on Aug. 25. The team then travels to Minneapolis, Minn. to compete in a Labor Day weekend tournament hosted by No. 6 Minnesota. In addition to the Cardinal and the host Golden Gophers, No. 14 San Diego and No. 25 Ohio will compete in the three-day event.
Stanford opens the home season the following weekend, hosting the annual Stanford Invitational in Maples Pavilion, Sept. 6-8. This year's line-up includes Saint Mary's as well as No. 17 Cal Poly and No. 20 BYU.
On Sept. 12, the Cardinal meets Cincinnati on the road, before heading to a tournament hosted by Yale in New Haven, Conn. On Sept. 14 the Cardinal will begin tournament action with Hartford, and will have a chance to square off with No. 5 Penn State the following evening.
The Cardinal begins its defense of the Pac-10 title on Sept. 21, battling Bay Area rival California in Berkeley. The Pac-10 will again provide a challenging agenda, as half of the conference finished 2006 in the top-25 and seven teams return from NCAA Tournament appearances. Three teams from the Pac-10, including the Cardinal, appeared in the 2006 Final Four.
Stanford's conference schedule is highlighted by home meetings with the other Pac-10 powerhouses. Stanford opens up home Pac-10 action with No. 8 USC on Sept. 27. Fellow Final Four participants UCLA and Washington will visit the Farm on Sept. 28 and Oct. 12, respectively, while the team closes out regular-season action with No. 13 California on Nov. 23.
