It seemed like it was just yesterday that Nebraska played Stanford in the 2006 Finals. Now it's February 2007 and time for Spring ball!! Yikes! Time really flies.

My guess would be that there aren't enough healthy bodies.
IMO, the entire spring season should be spent on serving and passing drills with those that are physically able.

Its almost hard to believe that UH lost 3 major contributors to season-ending injuries last year, isn't it? Several others are still healing up, too.

My guess would be that there aren't enough healthy bodies. You would be guessing correctly.

Yes, they should use this time to have regular passing drills. Because they have an embarrassing group of liberos. Too many, none of whom can pass. Get rid of some, already.

Let's see. Keefe, Hittle and Thomas are rehabbing or healing up. So we have Sanders, Kaufman, Gregory, Blood, Arnott, Houston, Mafua, Kitaguchi, Ong, Woolford, Duggins, Lee and Recca. In 2004, Hawaii had the same number of athletes on their spring roster, but still played the Japanese college team. This would be a good time to put Mafua through some action, and let some projected starters (Gregory, Kaufman and Lee) work on their kinks. Specifically, Gregory needs to be a factor offensively, Kaufman needs to be more consistent and Lee should know how to actually pass for a team of Hawai'i's caliber (or reputation). This would also be a good venue for Arnott, if she decides to stay, to play in an actual match after sitting out last year. Blood should see some well-deserved playing time, if Shoji plans to keep her. And let's see what Recca can do. Oh, and let's not forget the army of backup liberos who need to learn how to pass and serve in.

I agree with both your posts. Having so many players on a roster just wastes ball touching opportunities for the players who are going to contribute more. I don't mean just the starters. They will get their touches anyway but the main "second" team is the one that is getting hurt in my opinion. If the "third" team is mixing time with the second, then your primary subs are not getting as much time against the top team so their development is being hurt. If the third team is not sharing time with the second, then they are not really developing.
Nebraska went through the entire season with just 11 players on the roster. You mentioned 13 on yours for just spring season where there is MUCH LESS pressure to succeed since there are no rankings or seedings on the line.
Also, competition against outside teams is much better for morale than just playing with and against the same teammates all the time.

I suspect she won't be playing in the spring. This means Hawaii only have 5 hitters, 1 setter, and a bunch of DS/liberos. It is definitely enough to play, however Blood isn't going to be a major contributor. Do we know if Hawaii is simply not going to play a spring schedule or if they just won't have that huge match in the spring like they have a years past?

I just hope that the girls will rest up this spring and come out healthy and ready to go, come late August. I myself, like everybody else on here wants to see Dani Mafua and Stephanie Brandt in action. Hawaii will be extremely good at the setting position, that's for sure.
