Waite can get any kid he wants from the Badger state. Surely there are some big middles in Wisconsin. He also is an hour from Chicago. NO reason for Waite to go outside his geographical area. Most of those kids go back home anyway.

Badger are thin in the middle, and Pete Waite has recruited in Canada before (Maria Carlini). The Badgers have Elle Ohlander coming in at 6'5" and Pete Waite is looking to get bigger all around. Gabrielsen is a high school middle/setter, but I see Waite using her on the right side and not the middle. apparently she is a great leaper, but is rather small at 6'0". Badgers also could move either Ohlander or Pavan to the right side, since Jeffers will be a senior in 2008, this is a great opportunity for Pavan or Ohlander to get a starting position at the middle position, since Dykstra will more than likely be at the M1. the other big ten teams seem to be well stocked at these positions. MN is not well-stacked in the middle in '08. We have an amazing middle coming in + Jones, but only Schmidt as backup. Paven would likely start her frosh year on this team. And your rationale seems to be based on what your team needs, rather than an actual interest from Becky.

My speculation on Becky Pavan is nothing other than pure wishful thinking. The Badgers have 2 scholarships remaining for 2008. the other possible committ may come from Megan plourde from northern wisconsin. Looks like she plays club volleyball for northern lights in minnesota. Could see the badgers and gophers battling for this gem. How many scholarships does minnesota have for 2008?

Becky is a great kid and at 6'4" is similar to her sister and both parents - tall. Won Best Blocker Award at the Ontario Regional Seminar and at a National Youth Team event and runs a good step-around slide. This year she has been trying a 6-2, playing Middle Blocker front row and setting from the back row. She has decent hands. Minnesota, Wisconsin and Kentucky have all attended tournaments or practices recently and it looks like maybe she wants to stay a little closer to home than her sister.

So... what's wrong with Canadian colleges?

Nothing wrong with Canadian colleges. The level of volleyball in the top 25 division one schools is a much higher quality. If you want to be the best than you need to play the best!

So... what's wrong with Canadian colleges? Nothing. It's just that they don't give out the kind of scholies American Universities have, i.e., full ride for 4 years, etc. If I remember the system correctly, it is rare to get anything as a frosh (although Volleyball Canada tried to keep Sarah Pavan at home by offering her 4 years, but it pales in comparison to what a US scholie is worth). You then get a grant in your 2nd year. Don't know the exact numbers, but I believe it is less than $5,000 Canadian and you go from there. That said, going south on an athletic scholie isn't for everyone. Lots of kids end up coming back for whatever reason, from being homesick to realizing the scholie is like a job and you are expected to work for that scholie, i.e., practice and play and travel and sometimes, the schoolwork takes a back seat (I am generalizing here). We do have university volleyball that is also quite competitive and some programmes are better than others, but the league/conference is nowhere the size of the NCAA. At the end of the day, it is a decision that no one takes very lightly and hope that whatever decision you decide on, works in the long run.

Just so you guys know, there is another Canadian young lady that is being recruited just as, if not more than Becky Pavan. And she is 6'5 and can play defense.

I am assuming that Mike allows the 6'3 Schmidt to eventually play at Minnesota. She will be a senior in 2008 to go along with Gibbemeyer. Charde Phillips is a high flyer listed at 6'1 and a middle. I thought Schmidt might have red-shirted one of her first two seasons, but I am not sure. I know she did not play much. Illinois would could have really used this kid.

Badgers are thin in the middle....... This is a very interesting statement having in mind P Waite has been recruiting mostly MB’s since he came in 1999. Practically he has recruited only 5 pure OH’s in his 8 years at UW – L. Zukowski, M Weidner, L. Boler (sp), B Dolgner and C DuPont. Note, the last 2 came in 2006 while Boler turned out to be “too raw of a project”.

How come nobody is speculating that she will follow in her sister's footsteps and go to Nebraska?

Schmidt did not redshirt. This season is her big opportunity.

How come nobody is speculating that she will follow in her sister's footsteps and go to Nebraska? Because she has stated and been quoted as to not going to Nebraska. Wants to stay closer to home, and I'm sure she will enjoy not always being compared to her older sis by the Nebrasksa fans and media.
