The 31 year old passed away at Webuye district hospital on Monday night after along illness bravely borne. Barasa was first taken ill last year and consequently missed a four nation tournament in Nairobi and the World volleyball championships in Japan. The former KCB player then relocated to her rural home in Webuye where she was receiving treatment until her demise. One of the top players of the last decade, Barasa represented the country in three World Championships, two Olympic Games in Sydney and Athens and 13 continental events. The left attacker was the captain of the Sydney and Athens squads and played the same role during the 2003 All Africa Games in Abuja, Nigeria. A product of Lugulu Girls, Barasa played for Kenya Pipeline and KCB and also had professional stints with Egypt’s top side Al Ahly and other top clubs in Turkey and Greece. Turkey’s Dicle University, Hitachi Sawa (Japan), Al-Ahly (Tunisia), Vileo of Romania, Unic-Romania and Panellinios (Greece) are some of the clubs where she plied her trade. Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) is planning to hold a fund raising to assist her family as she was the sole bread winner.

I've had the opportunity to meet her, this is really sad. My prayers and thoughts go out to her and her family. Very tragic end to an amazing athlete!

God, it's been a long time since I was last on VT, only to read this about Violet Barasa. So talented and so young, to die before her time. R.I.P.......Violet!

You talk about one of the most corrupted governments in that region. But it's nothing new, one of the senior members of the parliament was convicted of stealing thousands, from a fund set aside for Marsabit and Wajir of the Northern Region of Kenya. The two cities have fallen on hard times since the mid 90's. And still considered some of the poorest regions in Africa. He was convicted but didn't serve more than a year, yet his staff, who helped him with the dirty deed are still in office.

It could be worse. An American running for President could promise that she would take ( exact word) profits from a public company for the government's use. But luckily, no one is threatening the existence of Title IX. Whew!!
