What I like about this is that it looks like the US NT is stepping up a little bit to be more serious about actually being one of the best.

I think they notify the ladies by the 9th and then make an official announcement on the 25th.

If you do get chosen, you still will have to compete for actual spots in the 12-person roster that will compete for the US, right?
With Beijing 2008 just around the corner, I wonder how many, if still in university, will put their lives on hold to try to make the Olympic team.

I asked a player who went to the tryout which tournaments/competitions this team will go to this year. She said the only major or if I heard right, there is only one tournament which will be the Pan AM Games in Rio de Janiero un July. I also ask her if they will go to Adult Nationals and she maybe. From what I gathered, this will not be a team selection for the 2008 Olympics.

The tryouts for the Olympic team will be done later this year? In the past, college athlete like Walsh, Tom and Ogonna Nnamani left school in January to train and compete for the USA NT then go back to school in September.

I would suspect that this past large tryout was an attempt to identify both long term and shorter term prospects. Those selected now to go to CS now, along with the training team that has been there in Colo Sprs will all compete with the returning players from the pro ranks in May?/June and I would suspect the 2008 Olympic squad will be defined much more definitely by latter on in the summer/early fall...at least most of them.
Jenny likely has her preferrred timing to do that....depending on what she sees in the next 3-6 months in terms of current skill level together and who keeps improving, and match experience/production this summer.
Whether any of those at the top of the list are still in college or not remains to be seen, and whether they will skip school this fall is up for grabs. It will be interesting to see who is in Colo Sprgs come Sept/Oct/Nov.

I see zero chance that players from major college volleyball programs with remaining college eligibility would spend Fall 2007 training with the American, Canadian or Puerto Rican national teams... it would be downright lame for those national teams to bite the hands that feed them.

I agree that it's unlikely that anyone with NCAA eligibility would skip the 2007 season to train with the national team. I don't understand the part of your post about national teams biting hands that feed them though. Especially the Canadian and Puerto Rican programs... If I was the coach of one of the afore mentioned national teams and I could get Pavan or Barboza in camp in 2007, I would give a rat about what anyone in the NCAA thought about it. As far as I'm concerned, the NCAA doesn't do anything for me that I can't do better myself!

Assuming that any player capable of even coming close to making the National Team is on SCHOLARSHIP AT THEIR RESPECTIVE UNIVERSITIES, I would certainly expect that the institution that IS PAYING FOR THEIR COLLEGE EDUCATION, would have first priority......collegiate women's volleyball isn't NCAA men's basketball, where we all know that there is about as much loyalty displayed toward the school that is giving them this free education as there was in Saddam's Army!
