From today's Star Bulletin. Gold, UH record for Sheppard in high jump Hawaii sophomore Emily Sheppard took first place in the high jump yesterday as the Western Athletic Conference indoor track and field championships opened at Nampa, Idaho. Sheppard also set a UH record with a jump of 5 feet, 934 inches to earn 10 points for the Rainbow Wahine. Freshman Amber Kaufman, an outside hitter for the Wahine volleyball team, made her indoor track debut, finishing in a five-way tie for second at 5-8 1/2. Cal State Northridge leads the meet with 53 points, and Hawaii is in fourth place with 25.5. starbulletin.com/2007/02/24/sports/hawaiibeat.html

As a sidenote---I have it on good authority (a reliable source at UH ) that Amber was hit on her scooter by a car. She was hit from the side and went into and smashed the car's windshield. This incident happened 9 ir 10 days ago. As the story goes, she was still in compression gear on the plane, hadn't been able to practice at all, and wasn't sure if she could jump...

Traffic in Honolulu is bad. How many bicyclists and moped/scooter riders get hit by cars? Plenty.

I hope this is rumor and didn't happen. If so, our thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery go out to Amber. She is a very good athlete and no one wants to see a career cut short by an accident.

It's not a rumor, but don't worry. She jumped in the WAC Championships AFTER the accident. There is a picture up on the Wacsports.com website of her and she looks fine. You can see some bruising and she is wearing something on her left ankle, but I am sure she is being well taken care of by the swell staff of UH. My own offspring totaled my car one week after she got her license. Let's be careful out there people!

Honolulu streets are insanely dangerous for anyone on mopeds, bikes, or walking. Its unfortunate. I was in a pretty bad bike wreck myself, have been in nearly 50-close calls on bikes and walking, and assisted several who I came across shortly after near misses. I only have to walk about 6-blocks a day on the streets, as well.
I hope that Amber wears her helmet after this. My dad always told me about being a pedestrian or a bicyclist: "Right or wrong, you're still dead"
I can tell you who the two largest demographics are of absolutely horrible drivers here, but I'd probably better not.

Maybe she'd have come in 1st hadn't it been for the accident.

You aren't joking about the safety of our pedestrians and other commuters not in cars...Honolulu already has had 8 pedestrians die after being hit by cars already this year...and a bunch of others hit...including four in a day couple weeks ago...along to go with that Honolulu is already up to 15 traffic fatalities this year and it's only February...compared to 9 at this same time last year... It is jus getting really dangerous on the roadways in Honolulu.
