Hi. First post, but longtime fan of volleytalk. I don't know if this has been discussed already, but after talking to two knowledgeable sources at my school (Eastern Washington University), The HAVC '07 teams are looking like: UH (of course), Wichita State, EWU, and a California team (I'm not sure which one. I think he said some UC school, but they weren't too sure). A coach I talked to said that there would be some good teams in the tourney and that they were going for some sun. When I asked how EWU would be this year, the coach said EWU would have an "athletic" team. Which, I guess, only means that EWU has very little skill at this point. But I'm just guessing. Does anyone know how UH would match up against these teams with their potential lineups in the Fall (like UH w/o kamano or thurlby)?

Oh. And according to the same coach, UH isn't challenging Eastern Washington in football. Don't know if that's old news or not.

They come out every year for a preseason tourney....generally the Hawaiian Airlines tournament

Eastern is one of my top ten favorite programs and one I'd like to keep up with more on this forum. Hope you stick around. Regarding Hawaii, it's not going to be an easy match for EWU, to say the least, but they are always a team that can give fits to their competition. It may or may not be UCLA, they've been jumping around a bit between opening and second weekend of competition in Hawaii. It'll probably be a Pac-10 team, though. I think we knew at one point, but I'm too busy to look it up. Either way, its an amazing tournament for the players and fans and one I recommend that any fan that is able make the trip to attend!

Coach Benson of EWU likes to fly under the radar and he is very good at developing potential talent. They will be a young team but they will have more height and skill next year: There are 2 6'1" red-shirt freshmen Middles (one of them can play all three front row positions), one 6'0" transfer setter (out of high school she was Volleyball Mag "Fab 50" selection and ranked 71st in the Prep Volleyball.com senior aces list) and an incoming 6'0" lefty Right Side freshman. If they gel, they might surprise some teams.

UCLA is always in the Hawaiian Airlines Volleyball Classics. So I wouldn't doubt it.
I still remember that Hawaii/EWU match back in 2001, it was a really good match at EWU's homecourt.

Sometimes UCLA isn't in the HAL. EWU/Hawaii was at WSU, 60-miles south of Cheney, in Pullman, WA. EWU's homecourt is a better advantage, even though they had a good contingency at that match. They put together a great all-out effort against Hawaii, but had no answer for Willoughby.

Oh yeah....you're right. I just remember now. Hawaii played both Washington State and EWU on that road trip and I also remember WSU's Latoya Harris.....and yes, Willoughby was phenomenal, she was unstoppable!!!

Wasn't that Kim Willoughby's breakout year? The best overall performance by a sophomore ever!
UCLA has been the only team to play Hawaii every year for as long as I can remember. Was there ever a year where the Bruins didn't play the Wahine?

UCLA does play Hawaii yearly as far as I know, however, they occasionally change up the weekend of play, such as was done I believe in '03.
Irregardless, yes, 2001 was Kim's "whoa, where did she come from?" year.
I saw many matches with LaToya Harris. She was quite the fireball and a great team player. I thought that she was a very strong right-side attacker that season for WSU. I was a little shocked to see WSU upset by EWU in the first round, the crowd was amazingly loud for that match, but EWU had more grit. I would say that you could call 2001 Janelle Ruen's breakout year, as well.
There were a lot of solid teams in that travel-minimized region, including Oregon State I believe in their last NCAA appearance.

New poster also. Enjoy volleytalk too. Like Santa Clara vball. If I understand correctly, I think SC is going to Hawaii this pre-season. I don't know if it is for this specific tournament or not. It would be fun to see the match-up with Hawaii though.

To bring up a past post, this was the schedule Hawaii tentatively announced back in December from the Honolulu Advertiser.
Hawai'i's 2007 schedule will tentatively include Oregon State, Colorado State and Michigan in the first tournament, Kansas State, Louisville and UCLA in the second and Wichita State, Santa Clara and Eastern Washington in a third. Five of those teams were in this year's NCAA Tournament. Dave Shoji also hopes to bring in a ranked opponent Thanksgiving week.
So, it does look like it will be either UCLA or Santa Clara in the Hawaiian Airlines Tournament against EWU and Wichita State. And either way, Santa Clara looks to be making a trip down here for at least one tournament.

Not tough, but not tooo cupcake. Would've liked to see more midwest teams in there (ie: Big 12, Big 10, Big East, SEC)

Let's face it, although Hawaii is returning many people in most positions, they lose the most important cog. Any program that loses a four-time All-American at the setter position, should consider it a rebuilding year. On a good note, Brandt brings some nice experience to the position. But, who would've guessed that she was going to be available?
