The MN women's basketball team fan website has a number of people confirming that Kelly will be playing for the vb team -- joining spring practice in a few weeks and playing the season.
Obviously she is a great athlete with strong vb skills, but do you really think she can come in -- obviously as a DS -- and make a difference on the floor? Do you think she is there to have another body for practice? Seems like it would take her many months to get to a high level of play -- and it makes you wonder why we would invest in her, rather than our super frosh who will be here four years -- not just one.
I'm sure there is a smart strategy behind it...never one to doubt the doctor.

Roysland was Ms. Volleyball in Minnesota her senior year and a PrepVolleyball.com All American.

I know I mentioned this earlier, but will mention it again.
Last time I spoke with her about this topic was well over a year ago... she just wanted to be a part of the volleyball program at the U. She is not expecting to make a difference, she said to me, hey I might not even see a minute of game time, I just want to play for Mike, and see what collegiate volleyball is all about.
Shes a great kid, and I was really pulling for her last night while watching the Big Ten tournament. She scored 18 points in the second half while trying to help her team make a comeback against Michigan State. They fell short, and are done in the tournament, and now waiting for most likely an NIT bid. She has been a joy to watch on the basketball court, and sticking this year out, her senior year says a lot about her character. I wish her luck in whatever she does next.

I remember reading an article after her senior-year state tournament championship where, to paraphrase, she was saying how bittersweet it was because it was possibly her last volleyball match. Seems to me it's entirely possible -- as airinga indicates -- that she just loves the sport and wants to play again.
More power to her.
And, speaking of power, I'm not sure there's been a player of her size with more offensive firepower since Amanda Rome. (I didn't see Bitter play this past year.) The kid is a superb athlete. Can't see where she would be anything other than an asset to the squad.

How many backrow players do they need? Roysland makes 7.

...some of whom have not been as effective (in, admittedly, limited playing time) as one would hope.

Thats exactly what her parents have been saying about the topic. I remember asking them a little over a year ago, and they said they are focusing on basketball, and did not want to talk about volleyball until after Kellys basketball career was over. side note: Kellys mom was her VB coach in high school and her dad now coaches at the U of M Crookston, and Kellys team played against her dads team this pre-season. Very athletic family obviously. Question: Basketball wise, when we see Kelly we think of offense, not defense... I did not see her play VB, but since she was ms volleyball in Minnesota, so I would think she had some offensive skills in that sport as well. Why all the talk about her being another defensive player for the U of M? Because of her height? Im just curious, perhaps some of you have seen her play back in high school, and can tell me more.

She was a terrific high school OH. Very, very athletic and she could hit the ding out of the Spalding.
But, yes, it's her height -- and the depth on the Gophers. I'm not saying it couldn't happen, but it's rare when someone her size has much success at the Big10 level as an OH.
I was wondering if she can set?

This is going to sound a little more snide than I intend it to, but is Roysland really worthy of such speculation? She's got one year, and the odds that she'll make any kind of lasting impact are pretty slim, aren't they?

What sort of speculation? You mean the thread itself?
I agree that the odds are long that she will make much of an impact, but she's not just any player at the U. 1) She was Ms. Minnesota Volleyball her senior year in HS, 2) she plays on a _very_ popular WBB team (which could help attract some fans to VB), and 3) she's extremely well-liked, especially after the BB events of 2006.
Personally, I am REALLY looking forward to seeing her play this Spring (and next year). I'm very curious as to what she can do at this level. I'd compare her to Amanda Rome and Kelly Bowman -- maybe even Sarah Florian.

I'll also add that I thought she'd have a much larger impact in BB than she did -- in terms of her play. I thought she'd be another Whalen. She wasn't.

But if she's as effective as Bowman, I'll eat my hat.

Just something for Gopher fans to talk about -- at this point.
Florian could have been a very good D1 player. No one will convince me otherwise.
