Hello everyone. I've been a long time fan of vball but had never really play the sport. Recently, my niece has picked up interest in the sport and my brother asked me to help her out since I know more about the sport than he does. I guess the question is are there forms of exercise which my niece could do in order to improve her vertical jump? Any advice you can give is much appreciated. Thank you.

If she is old enough, best to strengthen upper leg muscles to protect the knee from ACL tear. A consult from a certified trainer would be best, and ask about the differences between power and strength training regarding speed and agility which are probably more important than vertical.

Do not go straight into jump training. Good jump training requires strength in many areas that a younger player does not have. Go to a sports trainer and have them put her through some simple strength tests to see where her weaknesses are and help build her strenght up that way. It is better to develop overall strength at an early age than to focus on one aspect of the body. Once she has gotten stronger, then you can go into more focused training like speed, endurance, verticale etc. Besides, overall training and core strength will help the vertical anyways.

CiM Very simple.....just have her play. As she develops her game she will exercise those areas that are really needed for the sport. We have to much specialized training going on that in reality derails and holds back the natural development of the player. What I will be more worried about is teaching her how to play. If she develops good skills and instincts for the game.....the rest will come......UNLESS SHE COMES FROM THE WOODY HARRELSON family! ;D ESTRELLA
