The MHSAA announced this week that the U.S. Supreme Court will confer today about whether to hear its latest appeal in the sport season change litigation. An announcement could be made as early as Monday. If the Supreme Court declines to hear the case, the season switch will have to take place (whether or not it will begin this fall is not entirely clear). If it takes the case, then things remain on hold until a decision is rendered.

June 1 was set as the point of no return. If the decision comes after June 1, they will stick with the existing schedule in 2007 regardless of the decision and will play a new schedule next season, 2008. If it happens before June 1 and it comes down against MHSAA, then the switch will happen the 2007 season.

I assume this litigation relates to the seasons in which volleyball and girl's basketball are played in Michigan high schools. Unlike most states, they play basketball in the fall and volleyball in the winter.
I'm not 100% sure what claim is being made in the lawsuit, but I seem to recall reading something indicating that it related to decreased opportunities related to college recruiting for high school volleyball players in Michigan.
Could someone with more knowledge of this situation correct or expand on my explanation?

OK, here we go. And I am kind of new at this so don't slime me if I mess up.
Freeball has it right. Michigan plays high school ball in the winter and Girl's basketball in the fall. The state HS volleyball championships was two weeks ago. So here is how club works: clubs run workout sessions for anyone willing to pay to work out. Tryouts are held sometime before HS starts and don't practice until two weeks ago, when HS is over. Clubs have two to three weeks to get their teams ready to play qualifiers, if they go the USAV route. Majority of the teams go the AAU route and don't bother with USAV and qualifying for JO's.
A group of parents started a law suit 10 years ago. Their group is based in Grand Rapids. The lawsuit is about the high school seasons depriving the players of opportunities to be recruited by colleges. Michigan state high school athletics people said: 1) That is not their problem, that their job is not to look out for the player's recruitability. And I think that is the last reasonabler thing I have heard about this. The excuses from the state HS people have ranged from: 1) High school coaches like it this way, some do, some don't. 2) Too much juggling around, throws all the sports schedule off, I think girtl's volleyball and basketball are not the only sport affected. Soccer, and golf are some others. 3) They don't have enough good basketball referees. Having the boys and girl's seasons separate gives the basketball refs a chance to work both seasons. 4) This is the way it has always been. A blatant lie because I know someone who played in the fall and it wasn't until NSHAA was incorporated that they switched to winter volleyball. The reason for the switch? They took a vote and more schools play in the winter than fall at the time.
On the lawsuit. I got headaches trying to read it. Basically MSHAA has lost every step of the way. The last motions were that a federal appeals court ruled that MSHAA was inthe wrong, they appealed to the supreme court, supreme court sent it back to the federal appeals court on technicalities, the federal appeals court corrected the technicalities and it is now p to the supreme court to decide if they want to hear the appeal. If not, MSHAA has exhausted all avenues and the seasons will switch. If the supreme court decides to hear the case, the decision won't be heard until late this year and the case will be settled then.
OK, correct away at the facts, but I think I have it right, by and large.

HEY IT'S MICHIGAN, THAT SHOULD EXPLAIN IT ALL THOROUGHLY! You could have gone many different ways with this topic in your attempt to be funny. You could have used the problems plaguing the auto industry here in Michigan, you could have riffed on the wonderful Michigan winters, you could have made fun of the fact that this has gone to the Supreme Court. But no, you went for an ad hominem comment that was not funny and severely hurt your standing in the pantheon of humorous posters. Frankly I am disappointed.

But at least its self deprecating this time, still disappointing. By the way, the Supreme Court refused to hear the appeal. MHSAA has raised the white flg. Michigan is going to fall girls volleyball 2007-2008.
