I just love Christy Johnson. I remember seeing her play in the Nebraska All-Star match the summer before she started college at NU. The buzz in the gym in Lincoln was that there was this great setter that wasn't supposed to be playing that night because she had been injured. Since I was from out west (the good ol' panhandle of Nebraska), I hadn't heard about her. I was just there supporting one of the girls from my high school that made one of the teams (the opposite one as CJ). Well, needless to say she must not have been too injured because she was there and she played.
When she took the court and started warming up I couldn't believe the beautiful delivery she had. There was never a setter from my home town that ever had such touch and placement. In fact, I'd only seen players on tv (the little coverage there was back in the late 80's and early 90's), that looked as good as her.
She delivered. She led her team to a 5 game victory over my friends team. It was awesome volleyball. It was a pleasure following her career and particularly gratifying to see it culminate in winning the national championship in '95.
It's very exciting to see her having a positive impact with a program that has struggled for so long. I wonder if she has any conflicting feelings about playing, and wanting to beat, her former team. I'm sure the competitor in her just wants to win no matter what.
I think this year I'll have to grab some friends and make a road trip from the Twin Cities on down 35 to Ames for the NU/ISU match. I have a feeling that she'll continue to close the gap in talent and competitiveness with the Cornhuskers, so I'd better get there before those matches start selling out even in Ames.

Going to have to keep an wary eye on what Johnson is building in Ames. She is ramping up ISU volleyball in a hurry. I hope she turns them into a viable threat. The big 12, as a conference, needs more elite teams besides Nebraska and Texas. (the turn around at Oklahoma last season was incredible) When the PAC 10 puts three out of four in the final four and wins five of the past six championships, the rest of the country needs to step it up.

Nebraska has a pan handle? well, sorta'. It's not as skinny as Oklahoma's (you'll need a huge hand to grab ahold) but it's there, sitting ontop of northeastern Colorado. It's a stretch calling it a true panhandle.
