I thought it would be nice to break up the recent monotony of Husker & Hawaii threads....www.texassports.com/index.php?s=&url_channel_id=51&url_article_id=6362&url_subchannel_id=&change_well_id=2Destinee Hooker nabs fourth high jump championship at Texas RelaysAUSTIN, Texas -- Sophomore reigning national champion Destinee Hooker won her fourth consecutive Texas Relays high jump championship, and All-Americans senior Chauntae Bayne and sophomore Alexandria Anderson recorded the nation’s top two times in the 100-meter dash, on the third day (April 6) of the 80th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Stadium. Hooker (San Antonio, Texas) won her fourth consecutive Texas Relays high jump in clearing 6-2.25 (1.89m). After capturing two championships in high school, the reigning NCAA Outdoor High Jump National Champion ousted the field in her second straight Texas Relays as a Longhorn. She notched an NCAA regional standard for the third time this season in her tune-ups for the Big 12 Conference Championships.

What a gifted athlete. When she expands her volleyball game to include back row attacks, passing & digging-------look out. She's fairly raw at this point but the upside is frightening. Only saw her twice last season (vs Nebraska) but it was enough to convince me she has scarey good potential. Seeing her hit down over the top of a Pavan block time after time was stunning. Can't wait to see the 2007 version.

So I take it she is not playing spring ball?
If not, too bad. I was hoping to meet her next week in Aurora.

Raw is just it. My question is given how much improvement is made during the off season how much better will she get given her being on the track team? Will she be able to reach her full and quite scarey potential in volleyball given her two sport season with track(indoor and outdoor)?

I'm pretty sure you'll get to meet her in Aurora next week P-Dub. Destinee has been pulling double duty during the spring but she did suffer a hamstring injury during volleybal. Despite the fact she was able to win the high jump at the Texas Relays.
Eov, like Cook and Nebraska NEVER brought in a "RAW" player in before. Why so concerned? Just accept the fact that Destinee will win high jump championships every spring for the next 3 years. You can bet your drawers she'll be a volleyball AA 2007-09. Yes she would be amazingly much better if she could give 100% of her time during the spring but that's just not possible because she is a TRACK STAR. Judge her on the court come fall 2007. Let it go!

You really didn't get it, did you? Let me put it layman's terms. She is a dual (this mean's two just in case) sport athlete. Why? Because she can, she chooses to and because she loves to compete. Destinee may not excel in volleyball to the expectations of the masses but she will none the less be an AA this fall even without giving 100% of her time during the spring. Everyone should just accept the fact that she will not quit track and will not spend 100% of her time on volleyball. Matter of fact, she'd probably play basketball too if she could. She is a gifted athlete, why expect her to limit herself? D. Hook will finish her collegiate career as one of the most decorated female athletes ever and will have several opportunities to extend it professionally. Comprende, capiche?

Woah---who said she should quit track??? Not me. She's a phemon of an athlete. My question/point is simply that of wondering if we'll ever see Hooker meet/max her potential in volleyball while in college?? The same thing happened to Cris Hall who played for Nebraska in the mid 80's.....she was a raw vb athlete who won massive track championships at the conference and national level. We never saw Cris' potential in vb ever. We always just wondered! And yes John Cook recruited a raw athlete, her name is Houghtelling, Elmer, etc..........their names speak for themselves and their accolades as well but they were one sport athletes as are MOST college athletes. Letting it go now.................ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Yes a little hypersensitive for sure. If you read any Husker fans appraisal of Hooker, you will find most are very complimentary. (which maybe not YOU PERSONALLY, but its more than you could ever expect from a Longhorn fan..being complimentary of the opposition...and that's a universal perception, not a rival perception) In fact I just got done rewatching both Texas matches, because I was trying to figure out why they got swept in Lincoln. (no not a putdown, just bored and thought I would do some comparison of the matches, its snowing here again) Both times I was just shaking my head seeing her raw power. I hadn't even gotten to the Stanford match where I saw her playing backrow too.
The wondering outloud of what she would be like if she committed full-time to volleyball is a COMPLIMENT, because we all know she would probably dominate the college scene for the next 3 years. This is a volleyball board after all, so I think it's ok to at least wonder. No one is suggesting she should quit track for crying out loud. Congrats to her by the way. What a phenom.
