Ga. Tech and FSU looked good--they both went 3-1. Tech lost to Bama and FSU to Ole Miss. Other than that, they won out. Duke went 2-1-1 and Va. 2-2. For the SEC, Ole Miss had the best record, also going 3-1. Bama 2-2 (I think), Auburn tied with Duke in one, and lost the rest. Tennessee did not fare well at all. The ACC definitely won this spring tournament. Ga Tech did a
great job--very well organized!
Thanks Sunny! I'm glad that it appeared to look well organized! I've taken many notes to make it better for (hopefully!) next year...
Here are some results... I was stuck running the Coliseum games and was unable to get all the scores, but these are the ones I have:
9 AM
GT v Auburn - GT in 3 games - 30-16, 28-30, unknown (GT had no problem with Auburn early but could not find their groove in the 2nd game)
Bama v UVA - Bama in 2 games - 30-27, 30-25
Tenn v
FSU - FSU in 3 games - 24-30, 30-28, 16-14 (well played match! Both teams looked good. Tenn lost its momentum in the 2nd, ended up dropping it and losing the 3rd game they seemed to be expected to win)
10:15 AM
GT v Tenn - GT in 2 games - no scores, but definitely a confidence-building win for GT as they looked good against Tenn.
UVA v Auburn - UVA in 3 games - no scores
Miss v Duke - Miss in 3 games - 26-30, 30-25, 15-9 (sort of a shocker at first considering Duke's ability, but Ole' Miss definitely showed they could play with the best and that was very clear by the end of the day... they are going to be a good team this year)
11:30 AM
Duke v Bama - Duke in 2 games - no scores, but Duke looked very solid against Bama, the Bama coaches blamed it on someone not wearing their lucky shoes
FSU v
Miss - Miss in 2 games - 25-30, 29-31 (close, well-played match all around... I wouldn't mind seeing this matchup again! Miss again shows their ability to just get things done)
1:30 PM
Auburn v
FSU - FSU in 2 games - no scores
UVA v
Miss - Miss in 3 games - no scores
Tenn v
Duke - Duke in 2 games - 30-22, 30-26 (I was very glad to see this NCAA Tournament rematch, but the game was not as close as the scores sound. Tenn definitely stuck with Duke in score but did not look like they could or even expected to win. Tenn coach would have been issued a yellow card for taking over 2 mins in 2 of his 1-min time-outs, but the head ref held back. After all, it is a spring tournament
)
2:30 PM
GT v Miss - GT in 2 games - no scores, wish I could have been there!
Bama v
FSU - FSU in 2 games - 30-23, 35-33 (quite a thriller by all accounts as both teams really wanted the win)
Tenn v
UVA - UVA in 2 games - 30-21, 30-25 (UVA looked good, especially the incredible Sarah Kirkwood. UVA owned the match except for the middle-late period of the 2nd game. After a timeout, they were right back to it)
3:30 PM
Auburn v Duke - Tied 1 game a piece - no scores, both teams were anxious to shower and hit the road so they were content with 2 games
5:30 PM
GT v
Bama - Bama in 3 games - 30-27, 27-30, 15-11
What a match! Played excellently on both sides... a real show for the sizable crowd that made it to the game. Some incredible defensive work for both teams that had the crowd applauding play after play. Bama shook off their mid-day blues (and maybe someone changed back into their lucky shoes) and GT looked tired at the end of the match. First two games could have gone either way, as neither team could pull away with it. The third game started off with GT jumping ahead early and held a 8-6 lead at the switch. Then everything went bad... the score quickly went to 9-14 and Tech managed to grab a couple more points before Bama ended the game. Sad, from a GT fan standpoint, to be so close to a tournament sweep. But, the Tech team definitely played well. If we can work a few kinks out (emotion swings that leave us reeling), we might be in the top 25 again this year.
The ACC definitely took the day posting a 10-5-1 match, 24-14 game record.
[Knowingly opening a can of worms] Should we review the NCAA Tournament bids last year?
ACC non-tournament (GT, UVA, FSU) vs SEC tournament team (Tenn, Bama, Ole Miss):
5-4 ACC (12-9 games)
Overall, it was a great day! Good exposure for all the college teams to the high school teams in town for the Big South. Plus, there was some great competition. Hopefully we can do it again next year.
Speaking of which, if you were there for the tournament, please let me know if you have any ideas of how we could make it better if we do it again. Thanks!
