COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 10, 2007) – Middle blocker Charnette Fair (Ruby, S.C.) and outside hitter Kimberly Noble (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) have been added to the U.S. Women’s National Training Team as of April 10.
Fair competed two seasons at the University of Minnesota and finished with 329 total blocks between 1999-2000. She averaged 1.46 blocks and 2.63 kills per game with the Gophers, while attacking at a .324 clip at the NCAA Division I level. Fair set a Minnesota school record for blocks in a season with 175 during her junior season in 1999, and followed that with 154 blocks as a senior in 2000. She played her freshman season at College of Southern Idaho in 1997 before transferring to Golden West College where she earned AVCA Two-Year College All-America Second-Team honors in 1998. Before enrolling at Minnesota, Fair trained in Colorado Springs during the summer of 1999 as part of the USA Women’s National A2 program. After her collegiate career, she returned to Colorado Springs to train with the U.S. Women’s National Training Team in 2001. Over the past two seasons, Fair has competed in 14 AVP Tour events with two career-high finishes of 25th place in 2006. She also competed professionally this past season in Turkey to follow-up previous professional stints in Spain and Finland.
Noble, a four-year letterwinner at San Jose State University, finished her career as one of nine Spartans to record 1,000 or more career kills. A 2003 All-Western Athletic Conference First-Team selection during her senior campaign in 2003, she concluded her career with 1,809 kills for second all-time at the school. Noble added a school-record 5,013 attack attempts. She competed in two NCAA Tournaments, including an upset victory over Santa Clara University during the 2001 event as a sophomore. Noble, who played one season on the Spartan women’s basketball team in 2004-05 after exhausting her volleyball eligibility, served as an assistant volleyball coach at her alma mater during 2005. She coached City Beach Volleyball Club in the Santa Clara/San Jose area this past season.
The U.S. Women’s National Training Team now includes 15 members with the addition of Fair and Noble. National Team players currently competing overseas in professional leagues will begin to return to the squad in May.
Five players with remaining collegiate eligibility have been invited to train with the U.S. National Team for this summer. Stanford University’s Foluke Akinradewo (So., Middle Blocker, Plantation, Fla.) and Cynthia Barboza (So., Outside Hitter, Long Beach, Calif.), University of Nebraska’s Tracy Stalls (Jr., Middle Blocker, Denver, Colo.) and Jordan Larson (So., Outside Hitter, Hooper, Neb.), and University of Florida’s Marcie Hampton (Jr., Outside Hitter, Gainesville, Fla.) will begin training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs upon completion of their current academic year. Additional players may be invited to train with the squad.
Among the competitions the players will be vying for roster spots for include the Pan American Cup held June 19-30 at Colima, Mexico, and the Pan American Games held July 14-19 at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Other confirmed competitions on the 2007 schedule include the 2007 FIVB World Grand Prix with weekend preliminary stops in Poland (Aug. 3-5), Russia (Aug. 10-12) and Macau (Aug. 17-19). The FIVB World Grand Prix finals are slated for Ningbo, China on Aug. 22-26.
The NORCECA Championships will be contested Sept. 17-22 at Winnipeg, Canada, with a bid into the FIVB World Cup at stake. The World Cup is the first 2008 Olympic qualifying event with the top three teams advancing. The NORCECA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, held for teams within NORCECA which did not qualifying for the Olympics at the World Cup, will set for Dec. 14-22 in Mexico.
