With a concentration of good teams out West second rounds can get intense. Santa Clara took out Stanford two years ago, and in my opinion and observation Santa Clara will be good again, but perhaps not in top 16. So where will they end up, perhaps hosting Stanford this year in the second round? UCLA and Utah was not an easy match, nor Washington at Colorado, who beat Nebraska. Hawaii to LongBeach was an adventure, I'm sure. The Eastern and some of the Midwestern matches APPEAR to be much more lopsided, although I don't know the teams from out here. UCSB, who has never missed the tournament, Pacific, who missed two years ago for the first time, and most WCC teams are western conference champs who get tied in with Pac 10 teams, usually in the first two rounds. Note a little resentlment when considering first and second round opponents for Penn State, Florida, perhaps Nebraska and Texas, etc. compared to West Coast sub-regionals. More of those 16-25 teams out this way, or has been. Rest of the country is catching up and filling in the top 25, so this could just be a rant, but don't think so.

I am really happy with Madison being one of the sites. It is a lot closer than the Green Bay regional was (139 miles or so). I just hope it doesn't snow that weekend so any visiting fans can make it.

I don't understand why the NCAA is giving Florida another year of hosting- after choking in the semis last year. Mary Wise has been a vocal point of the committee though...
Somehow i'm expecting Hawaii to get dropped on the road again for their entire duration of the Tournament. Therefore I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the Penn State Regional again.

The frequently screwed-over Minnesota should have been.

2008 is better for the Gophers -- and Wisconsin hasn't had one.

Another thing the selection committee really needs to consider is if it will be easy for fans to get to the regional facilities. I know they cannot predict this but one of the big reasons I didn't go to Gainesville last year to watch the Gophers is the fact that it was just to difficult to coordinate flights to get there. Other than MN being placed in the WI region, which is highly unlikely unless WI is not seeded, I'm sure I will run into the same issue.

Hard to say what other sites should have been chosen since we do not know who submitted a bid. I agree with (R)uffda in that MN will likely submit a bid for 08 and should be a host. It would be nice for the team to come back home after being sent to Vermont for the first/second rounds! ;D

So you think the NCAA would give the Gophers a "bye" for the first to matches by sending them to Vermont? UVM doesn't have an NCAA volleyball team, the state doesn't have high school volleyball, and I don't recall seeing any courts on the beaches when I visited the UVM campus and area. They do have field hockey in high school though.

And the sport continues to become more and more of a joke. Either no one is willing to take on the expense, or fairness just isn't part of the equation. Anyone else surprised Nebraska didn't get a regional? That the Big10 received two? That Florida gets back-to-backs? That God isn't doing something about The Cardinal? And the $tanford juggernaut just keeps rolling along. Nebraska vs. $tanford in 2007 NCAA Championship match -- don't be against it.

From today's Gainesville Sun.
Hosting the regional
Florida volleyball never even planned on bidding for a 2007 regional host site. Last week, the NCAA awarded Florida one of four host sites.
It all happened last December at the NCAA coaches association meeting when NCAA volleyball liaison Sharon Cessna told coaches that fewer bids than expected had been received.
Wise, who assumed getting back-to-back bids was next-to-impossible, returned to Gainesville and immediately placed a bid.
"It was totally unexpected because we just didn't see the NCAA rewarding Gainesville two years in a row," Wise said.

If Wisconsin does well this year, I could easily see them being the team that gets sent to the Northeast for the first two rounds, since they will be hosting the regional. If it happened, I wouldn't like it much, and I think it is a stupid way of doing things in general, but Minnesota has gotten that screw job twice, so the Badgers are probably due. It would be nuts if Minnesota were seeded and had to go out there again.
