According to PrepVolleyball (JTawa):
"6-5 Katie Kabbes commits -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's Penn State, which came in late to snag the North Carolina Gatorade POY, a junior OH from Triangle VBC and Cardinal Gibbons HS in Raleigh.
Congrats to Katie and to the Nittany Lions!!"
If Penn State does not make it to the final four with additional talent like this, they'll definitely be underachievers. They're already loaded plus some more with Katie. Congratulations!

PSU isn't going anywhere until they get someone who can pass and play defense.

PSU isn't going anywhere until they get someone who can pass and play defense. They've got a great player in Alyssa D'Errico coming in this upcoming season. She'll definately challenge Holehouse at libero.

I'm really surprised - she is the only 2008 recruit for Penn State.

When you can't pass against Nebraska their block becomes dominating. Penn State can't pass and Nebraska can block!

I've thought about it even more. They also need a more consistent setter. Maybe Yanz will be healthy this year. Glass was just too inconsistent and didn't connect with the middles that well.

It will be interesting to see who plays right side for them this year and whether that person will be an offensive threat. It would make them a lot harder to defend if they got the middles and right side hitter more involved. Harmotto is tough to stop, and Walbridge has looked fine hitting from the middle from what I have seen of her. I am a little surprised they didn't set her more, but they might do that this year now that the setters have gained more experience. You don't want to be all left side, but I do think that Penn State is probably the team in the country that has the best chance to be able to pull out a win when their ball control is off. Fawcett and Hodge are really good and will probably just get better, unfortunately. I do think the back row play is their major weakness. Hodge has some work to do back there, and they just don't seem to have as many good defensive specialists or all around players as they have in the past. Still, I don't think I would call them underachievers on the basis of last season. They won the Big Ten with three new starters, including the setter, and I don't think many teams would have been able to beat Washington in Seattle, the Huskies' meltdown in the Final Four notwithstanding.

Penn State will rock your world this fall. This club returns everyone minus Salyer and Holloway. Salyer was solid, but Holloway NEVER saw the floor. Blair Brown will fill the void left by Salyer and be a better offensive weapon. She may be the most unheralded player in the land. Look for the ball control to improve dramatically as Hodge and Fawcett add a year of experience (still only a soph and a junior) and D'Erico will bring a calming presence and add defense to what Holehouse already provides. A sophomore setter is so much better than a freshman setter and Russ will now have two sophs as opposed to two green weenies. The middles are solid, but Penn State will still live and die with their outsides. I am on the record saying Penn State wins it all in 2007. It will be one great year in college volleyball with Nebraska and Stanford having as much talent as ever, and teams like Texas, Florida, and Hawaii close behind.

Ohio Valley, Harmotto solid? I'd hate to see a great MB!

I use the term solid in the most positive sense of the word. I would say that John Dunning is a solid coach, or that the Big 12 is a solid conference, or that the Braves have a solid pitching staff. I still suggest that Penn State will throw 4 times as many balls to their outside hitters as to their middles.

Sorry to tell you ohiovalley, but the two outside hitters you mention are very good attackers due to their height and jumping ability. Now when it comes to back row play that was never a big priority for them as you can see today. If the HS or club coaches would have taught them this conversation would not even be on this board. Bottom line is that you can tell me they are just So and Jr.....there are many So and Jr that have developed that skill. These two will be avg at best. PSU needs to bring in some kids that can pass and play D and have them on the floor. This will then allow these two kids to exploit there strengths! ESTRELLA

Estrella, D'errico (incoming) is one of the best ball handlers, defenders, competitors in the country, ask anyone who has seen her play.

ESTRELLA This was basically my argument all last season regarding Penn State. I thought Kate Price needed to be in there full-time instead of Sayler even tho Cassie is a stronger hitter/blocker. It pays dividends to have 2 solid passers (Price and Holehouse) in the entire time. Instead, PSU only had Holehouse along w/ an erratic Hodge and slew of anonymous defensive specialists. That doesn't really make for a stable serve receive team.
