gobulldogs.cstv.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/050907aae.htmlThis in addition to the 3 players signed in November. Coach must be cleaning house if he's bringing in 8 new players for next year. I suppose there is no place to go but up for this program though. As a sidenote, I still think it was a mistake to fire Lindy Vivas, whatever happened to her lawsuit anyway? I remember reading that the reason the AD gave for her dismissal was the failure to compete for a WAC title, but 3 years later and they are further anyway than ever from that goal.

This is odd. I would expect this in the first season or two, but this is his third year at the helm. A coach usually will clean house the moment he comes in, maybe the second year after he has had some time to evaluate everyone and see if these players fit his system. But 8 players for his third year is extreme.

Three liberos and two sub-6-foot outside hitters. Who does Nieves think he is? Dave Shoji? ;D I hope they didn't have any holdover liberos/defensive specialists. Or maybe Nieves thinks he's Don Nelson and he's going to play small-ball this year. ;D

Not only did Reuben need to implement his preferred system, and evaluate who was there on the team, it may have taken him longer than expected to recruit what he wants to FSU. The change in coaches was not without a lot of comment and I am sure lotsa feelings/opinions in the HS coach and club community. Sometimes it takes awhile for a new group of HS players to come along and be informed/ interested in what he is trying to do there. 'Moving on' in this case, likely took awhile for the vb community. I would imagine he also spent some time looking locally as the SJ valley has a ton of junior vball players.
Reviewing what he announced in Nov., and these 5, he has brought in 2 locals and the rest are all out of the area....
One would expect FSU to be much more successful in a couple years with an almost complete changing of the roster.

Sooner rather than later with this overhaul of the roster.

Of these five new players, it would seem that 4 of them are walk-ons. Notice that only one of the five new players have signed an LOI.
If you can get walk-ons to join the program and compete, why not? Especially when you have so many areas to beef up on.

Maybe they should call Tarkanian and ask for some tips on how to recruit.

Maybe they should call Tarkanian and ask for some tips on how to recruit. Tarkanian used to recruit by bringing in transfers from big time schools, these are players who were very talented but often had troubled pasts. His teams usually had the most talent in the WAC but would often lose to teams with less talent but played a more disciplined style of basketball. This just shows the dangers of relying too much on transfers... I wonder if any volleyball teams follow this Tarkanian method of recruiting.

I wonder if any volleyball teams follow this Tarkanian method of recruiting. If Tarkanian recruiting means bringing in troubled kids who wouldn't blink an eye at being paid under the table, probably not. If if means focusing on transfers, especially if one includes twenty-something "freshmen" and "sophomores" from foreign countries, definitely.

Tark had some success at UNLV with his recruiting method.
