The UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team has signed two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent during the spring signing period it was announced recently by head coach Kathy Gregory. High school seniors Caitlin Saxton (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) and Charlene DeHoog (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian HS) will join the Gauchos in the fall of 2007. ucsbgauchos.cstv.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/052207aaa.html

Well, we are still going to be quite young all the way around, but these two at least give Kathy some more options. It sounds like they are the expected left outside and Libero starters. We'll see at the end of August. (Are we there yet?)

Division V: Bakersfield Christian Rallies Big in First State Finals
High ball to Charlene DeHoog in the middle. High ball to DeHoog on the right. On the left. Back row. Anywhere and every time.
That was the formula for Bakersfield Christian, which rode 32 huge kills from its senior striker to win the first state title in school history, beating Castilleja, 21-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-21, 15-7.
Castilleja, which had won 16 of its last 19 matches entering the today, had the chance to win the match in three games. The Gators used the strong setting of Katherine Jordan, sound back-row defense anchored by Audrey Kuan and error-free ball to win Games 1 and 3 and they led Game 2, 23-21, before Bakersfield rattled off the last four points to stay in the match.
Bakersfield Christian squared the match at two sets apiece by scoring the last four points of Game 4, then used that momentum, and a six-point serving run from Carson Kovac to get off to a fast start in Game 5 and cruise to the win. DeHoog, an easy choice for finals MVP, had the clinching kill.
“By the fifth game we were ready to play,” said Eagle coach Judy Rexroth. “We ended the way we should have started.” MVP: Charlene DeHoog, Bakersfield Christian
All-Tournament Team: Katherine Jordan and Laura Smith, Castilleja; Elisse Wolff and Justine Schoneveld, Bakersfield Christian

UCSB didn't look too bad during spring season considering what they had to work with (some players had never seen court time before). Although their W/L record didn't tell the whole story of how they played as a team, they played much better than last years spring tourneys.

I have seen Saxton many times and think she'll be GREAT in the front row. Super player. Hard hitter. Can play all around. I believe she was with La Costa Canyon so you know she's been well-coached. Look for her to contribute as a freshman. As for any player from Division 5, well....

D5 players would hopefully have been playing on a great club team to help them face tougher competition and have earned lotsa floor time competing against very skilled teammates ....remains to be seen what they do in college.

She has the height and she knows how to carry a team on her back, so those are two big points in her favor. Does she have the talent, we'll just have to wait and see. I'm looking forward to seeing, only 66 days to go...

Hey, believe me, I'd love for the kid to get the shot, but I'm not holding my breath.

Saxton is a good kid with a lot of heart and a lot of vball IQ and hits the ball hard for her size. Has been with winning teams and knows how to win. Nothing against her at all, but if UCSB needs her to hit OH they are not going to be contending to win at a very high level. She is just not big enough or gets up high enough. No way she touches 10'.

I believe Kathy at least initially has Saxton penciled in at Libero and backup outside. I do remember one pretty good 5'10" outside named Gelke, so who knows...
