What D-1 program do you think will take the BIGGEST jump up or down the RPI rankings? It will be fun to see if your predictions will hold up by the end of the season! Mine are as follows (no real statistical backing here, just gut feelings): Biggest Jump: Navy,Butler, UMKC, Depaul, Baylor Biggest Fall: Oklahoma, Missouri, Mississippi, Winthrop

Biggest fall - Utah. I hope they can recover soon, but they have really taken a beating this spring/summer.

Butler will have the biggest jump. Greatest recruiting class in many, many years. Now if the coaching can just do it's part. Butler jumps 90 spots
Evansville may suprise many. Jump about 50 spots
Arizona - Jump about 30 spots
Agree with New Mexico

Pacific at 185 could move up a lot; decent program in a relatively weak league. Ttah St. at 192 is usually better than that. Nevada at 147 could move, been an NCAA team before last year. Of the better teams, USF at 66 could move up, but obviously not 90 places. Agree Oklahoma and Utah look to go backwards.

RPI has as much to do with who you are playing, as how good you are. A team can have a ton of talent, but if they play weak teams in a weak league, it will be hard for them to move up.
Any of those teams playing a strong non conference schedule?

A tough part about this is that the rankings are not linear. There is a much bigger difference between #1 and #100 than between #101 and #200. You can see this in Pablo rankings (Rich, where the heck are the RKPI "ratings"? All I can find are rankings), where the difference between 1 and 100 is more than 3000, but the difference between 101 and 200 is only 1100. Thus, a Kansas St jump from 97 to 30 (a real possibility, IMO) would be a bigger jump than Pacific going from 185 to 85.

Pacific will have a hard time moving far, because they play a weak non-conference schedule. Same goes for New Mexico, Butler, and Evansville.
Doesn't mean they won't be better, but if the teams they play aren't better, it makes it harder to move up.
Arizona has a good chance, as the teams they play in-league all have a pretty high RPI. non league they do have St. Mary's, Kentucky, Utah St.,& Pepperdine. So it will be easier for them to move up.

Good point on matches needed to improve RPI. Butler _should_ be a better team, but it might not be reflected in RPI. New Mexico will be better. Ball State will be better.
Which direction will 'Nova, Georgetown, San Fran, go?

Don't see George town's schedule up yet, and I don't see anything about incoming recruits. They should be more experienced though, if all the returning players are there. their RPI last year benefited from playing Stanford and Santa Clara.
Nova has a couple of decent matches, but it looks like last year's schedule was much tougher. but they lost some talent, and lost some recruits due to the coach leaving. i would expect them to fall to at least 200 in the RPI.
San Francisco really upgraded their schedule. starting off with Washington, and having Oregon and Cal Poly on the schedule should push them up, along with a good league schedule. they should break into the top 50 if they have decent success on the court.

Pacific will have a hard time moving far, because they play a weak non-conference schedule. Same goes for New Mexico, Butler, and Evansville. . Although schedule is an important part of RPI (indeed, the biggest component), the teams W/L record tends to have a comparable (if not bigger) effect on the deviations in RPI rating. That is because W/L record will vary much more so than opponents and opponents/opponents records. Opponent records might range from .400 to .600 (and opponents/opponents will vary even less). Given the 3/4 weight, the opponents records could account for .150 difference in RPI. OTOH, individual team records vary from basically 0 to 1.000. Even given that it is only a quarter of RPI, that would make a difference of .250 in RPI rating. (BTW, I could do a better estimate if I could find the actual ratings, as opposed just rankings. RICH!!!!!) In the last 4 years, Pacific's RPI rankings have been 51, 64, 90, 185. Last season, their opponent strength of schedule ranked 90th overall, and opp/opp was 64th. However, it was their 8-21 record that killed their RPI, where that was 264th. If they can improve their record to .500, that will improve their RPI by more than .050, which is a large jump. That would take a massive change in opponents to offset it. I think that is the basis for claiming they will improve. Similarly, Evansville was 12 - 18. They do have a legitimate chance to turn that into 18 - 12 this year, which would be a huge boost to their RPI. Their schedule won't be that much weaker than last year (where it was pretty darn weak). Yes, some teams are limited in the RPI based on their schedule. However, that does not mean they can't improve. The main way to do that is to win. Ball St is especially clear. Not only do they have room to improve their record, they can also improve their opponents. They were especially hurt by their opponents schedules (something like 236). Their schedule should improve, as should their record.

From UC Davis website:
6/28/07 Volleyball Officially Opens Aggie Action In 2007-08 UC Davis women's volleyball will effectively launch the university's first year as a full-fledged Division I program. The Aggies open at Northern Arizona's Hilton Garden Inn Invitational on August 24, the first official contest by any UC Davis squad this fall. (The women's soccer team will face Chico State in a scrimmage three days earlier.) The team's upcoming slate features seven teams that competed in the 64-team NCAA tournament last fall.
Last year Davis was 229. Does anyone have a guess for this year?
