Coach Cook made a comment that they grade the athletes on their summer conditioning based on four categories. Christina Houghtelling was NUMBER 1 in all four categories Obviously there is a lot more to coming back from an injury like she had than just getting her strength back but physically dominating this group of athletes is a great start. She was also off her "specialized" conditioning program during the summer and was working on the same training program as the rest of the team. She felt that was a huge psychological boost to feeling she was really back with the team.

I'm sure he said that for a bunch of reasons. The first to acknowledge her extraordinary effort in the off season,(which I am sure he would if any player had that distinction. Second to help her confidence in trusting herself physically after a potentially career ending injury. , which is huge for athletes. Also, to send a message to everybody, that she's back. But mostly to see if someone on volleytalk would try to make something about nothing.

Was it on Media Day last year that he made the statement about Dani Busboom becoming the best libero in the NCAA? He certainly is quotable.

Or it could have been a response from the media asking how her off season training has been going! What better way to respond to that question than telling them how it has been going ... sheesh

When asked if she felt more pressure this year than last, she responded that she actually felt more relaxed this year than last. There was a lot of pressure to reach the final four in Omaha last year. They know as a team they are going to get everybody's best shot and she and the rest of the team embraces that. She knows this team has the leadership it takes and the biggest challenge is going to be incorporating the five freshmen so they know they are part of the team. Actually, I think that was Stalls that added that last part about bringing the freshmen into this program.
Also, Cook was asked whether it be would a 5-1 or 6-2 and he said they will be making that decision in the next couple of weeks. It depends on if a great Libero develops, how equal the setter's are, how ready the freshmen are to contribute at a high level, and which system will give the Huskers the best opportunity to be successful. The fact that it is even an option is a bonus that most teams don't enjoy. (I added this part, not Coach Cook.)
Cook was also asked about any redshirts and that won't be decided until sometime after the Red-White game.
In other words, learning what this team is about is what the preseason is for.

Was it on Media Day last year that he made the statement about Dani Busboom becoming the best libero in the NCAA? He certainly is quotable. Well, he really wasn't that far off. Best libero in the country...maybe not. But one of the best...an argument could be made. Anyone who watched her against UCLA and Stanford would agree, I suspect. Anyway, typical John Cook. He loves talking to the media and giving them sound bites. I almost think he does it just to give some juicy quotes to the local media so that they'll cover the team more. Side note: here's a short clip of the huskers first practice... journalstar.com/media/view/?mid=M46ba50fd39252

I don't know if he loves talking to the media or not but they sure crowd around to listen to him. Here is a shot from Media Day. I wonder how many other volleyball programs have this sort of interest for their media day?

That's a nice clip to get an inside look on how things work at NU, as well as seeing how involved Cook is in the training. Does he normally do this, or was it for this media piece?

He normally does this. They typically break up into groups and different coaches focus on different aspects of the training.

Cook is that involved all the time. That's his style and personality. I anxiously await the red/white scrimmage. I have a feeling based on what I've been reading in local media that Tara Mueller may play a bigger role than Licht. No specific comments though on Licht.
