OMG...like....totally....you absolutely have to dive after ALOT of balls when you play backrow in order to DEMONSTRATE to all the fans what a great defensive player you are! Heaven forbid you should EVER attempt to play defense CORRECTLY based on SOUND VOLLEYBALL PRINCIPLE AND TECHNIQUES. And don't ever POSITION YOURSELF CORRECTLY defensively and PLAY THE BALL UP AND WITH CONTROL on a straight up dig. You absolutely have to dive after balls to be considered A GREAT DEFENSIVE PLAYER BY THE FANS, even though your defensive play barely gets 4 feet off the floor (which you will never see because you're DIVING all over the place) and all your teammates can do is freeball it back into play. Don't ever think that you can DIG A BALL WITHOUT DIVING and get it to your setter in some kind of position that she could actually SET A BALL and maybe your team gets a TRANSITION PLAY and maybe a TRANSITION POINT from your NON-DIVING defensive play.

Love that, 38 Skynyrd. A lot of college liberos love to be flashy, diving all over the place even when it is absolutely unnecessary. Some of Hawaii's defensive specialists exhibit this style.

It's funny how people can just blow a simple thing into something so ridiculously huge. I know you didn't directly state a specific person in which you are directing your above statement to, but since I can see the obvious writings on the wall, I would have to say that in all fairness I did not intend to give the idea that a good Libero has to be able to dive for balls; that is not what my argument was about at all to begin with. DISCLAIMER: I guess I did make some/a statement(s) that could have sounded like I was talking about 'Liberos diving' in general, but that was never my intent. For that I have to apologize that you could not understand such a well- thought out sophisticated statement in which I really..... yeah sure.... really.... meant that all great Liberos have to dive for balls. OTOH if you were not referring to my post, which is highly unlikely, then you do make a good point/case in the whole 'Liberos diving' topic.

Best Libero/DS in a Wahine uniform - Nalani Yama%*$#a. You rarely saw her dive for a ball (except when popping up a ball that was rolling through the block). Nalani was always in position and fed AhMow digs/passes that allowed Ljungquist to dominate. To this day, I still believe the MVP of those Wahine teams was Nalani Yama%*$#a.
Oops, this an Aneli thread. Again, I reiterate my statement of a few weeks ago. If Aneli is healthy and in shape, she will be a starter .. she is too good to sit and is EXACTLY the type of player that was missing from last year's lineup. GO ANELI!!

If your defensive skills do not include (along with proper positioning) quickness, ability to anticipate where the ball's going and ability and willingness to dive dig, I think you are seriously deficient as a backrow specialist, and should not be playing DI volleyball. And if you do, expect to warm the bench. Not all balls will be hit near to you all the time. In fact, many, if not most, of the balls will be aimed between players or at open spots. MLB outfielders make outstanding plays when they catch the ball by diving. Balls hit to them, regardless of how hard, should be routine catches. Of course, in volleyball balls may be more difficult to handle being so close. Your reaction may not be fast enough to stop getting smashed on the face. But this is exactly why I think, tho I am not a vb expert, diving is very important in vb. To avoid getting a facial! Seriously, because of the closeness, the libero and the vb backrow specialist may need to dive more often than they'd like to to get to the ball. As I recall, all the great back row specialists in the Wahine teams were great divers- Nalani yama%*$#a, Illustre, Villaroma, watanabe, etc.

*Freakin' thread hijackers!*
How about Aneli's backrow skills? I'm not surprised she was training as a libero with the National team. She's that good.

great to know that! Shades of Nalani Yama%*$#a who was effective in both the front and the back row. what's so exciting about her is the talk that she may hit harder than Houston.

You just completely exposed yourself as far as not knowing what the HELL you are talking about. "Shades of Nalani Yama%*$#a who was effective in both the front and the back row." What the heck? Did you actually ever SEE Nalani Yama%*$#a play in her 2 seasons at UH? Effective in both the front and back row. Good gosh! How could she be effective in the front row? SHE NEVER PLAYED FRONT ROW IN HER UH CAREER! Except for the occasional coaching gaffs in 95-96 when they missed the Cia Goods/Nalani sub, Nalani Yama%*$#a never played front row. Pretty much why I never read anything you UH fans write, except for roy. You guys try to espouse technical volleyball concepts when you have no idea what you are talking about. Stick to the "GAWD I LOVE HER SHE'S THE BESTEST UH WAHINE EVER!!!!" threads.

All of this has been blown out of proportion. Otineru is one of the hardest hitters on this year's team. Houston is looking all-world in practice and so are the other players stepping up their game. It is Otineru's all around game that is very good, she's a great passer/defender and a good hitter, the combination of those makes her an automatic for one of the vacant OH positions.

Was Otineru on the same team as Asia Kaczor of USC? If not did the two ever challenge each other? Or am I missing something and they were both in different divisions...

Both played for Southern Idaho in 2005. In 2006, all kinds of problems happened with the athletic department where the Womens Volleyball Head Coach and Athletic Director were either fired or released from their contract.

Of course, I watched Yama%*$#a play every year of her career with the Wahine. just made a mistake. She and Cecila Goods were a great tandem, cecila in the front and yama%*$#a in the back. I was thinking of someone esle. But you sure came strong, and you are not even a wahine fan! I think you are smarting regarding the diving comment I made in the above. tsk, tsk...
I should also mention that I read your comments and I respect them, except when you lose control. By the way, I agree with you about Roy. That guy is so level headed. Now if you can be like that. lol Really, you're ok. if you're not a Wahine fan yourslef, how come you kept close tab on Nalani? I was thinking of Toni Nishida. My mistake.
