Shoji always dedicates way too many roster spots to backrow players. All you need are two, one libero and one normal substitute. Three at the most. How many does he have? Like fourteen? How the hell can you run a decent 6x6 drill when the starters are playing against blocks that are 5'6" to 5'9". If you throw Sealy in there then you throw it even more out of whack. 6'7" dude touching around 11'4" blocking next to a 5'9" girl touching around 9'8". No wonder UH hits like crap against the top teams, they get all confused against a real and normal looking D1 women's college block. He has five backrow-only players. That may be one too many, but remember the 2004 NCAA tournament when Ashley Watanabe was injured and replacement Teisa Fotu had to move to right side because Tara Hittle was struggling vs. Wisconsin? Kelly Ong and Raeceen Woolford played libero the last three games. They didn't win, but were able to come back from a 0-2 deficit.

Liz will be starting at Libero before mid season. Bet on it. Her passsing is nails. Besides how weird would it be for the walk on libero to start ahead of the libero on scholarship.

Omg....what's the hold-up. Kaufman is very quick, a good blocker, and jumps incredibly well. But Otineru is the complete player....what's there to think about?

I wanna hear more about Amanda Simmons?..... Does she really have a chance to start this season or even see playing time?... Cause with Both MB's being they're last year, Amanda is goin to have to get some playing time for next season. i read that even though gregory and sanders are back, that amanda simmons should be seeing playing time in the middle because she is really pushing and is ahead of expectations for a freshman, which in this case is good. i got to tell you, hawaii is making me very anxious. 3 nights in a roll of hawaii volleyball is awesome.

Actually Kaaihue is the first ever scholarshiped libero at UH. Lee was a walk-on. Not sure if she is on schollie now or what. Lee has looked very good at practice. Has improved much from last year. Hawaii should be set at that position for the coming years. BTW...the most athletic UH team I have seen since Kim and Lily days...whatever that amounts to.

If Mafua were to start at setter, Brandt would be a viable option in the back row for her serve and ballhandling. Does this mean Shoji is 'pondering' about a possible two-setter offense? Also, anyone know when Cindy Luis (Star Bulletin) will publish that Wahine Season Preview? I know it has to be within the next two days, of course.

simmons is a good, athletic "volleyball" player. she moves well along the net and hits a pretty effective slide. all of hawaii's incoming players this year are athletic and dynamic. they all hit the ball hard. simmons will push gregory and sanders all year in the middle and i predict that she will be better than they were by her senior year.

Simmons is indeed a nice surprise. I predict she will be better than Sanders and Gregory by next year.

This is a no brainer.......I'd go with the better passer...Kaufman's quickness and jumping skills don't matter if the pass ain't there because she won't be seeing a set coming her way. If Otineru, Hittle and Lee are Hawaii's primary passers, Hawaii will have a great run this year.

Even if this is coming from Shoji through Cindy Luis, Shoji may change his mind if he sees something Thursday or Friday. And he is going to play with the line ups, so we will be seeing a bunch of people play. Those that play best in game time will become the starters.
