Omg....what's the hold-up. Kaufman is very quick, a good blocker, and jumps incredibly well. But Otineru is the complete player....what's there to think about? Exactly! What is the hold up? This is a no brainer.......I'd go with the better passer...Kaufman's quickness and jumping skills don't matter if the pass ain't there because she won't be seeing a set coming her way. If Otineru, Hittle and Lee are Hawaii's primary passers, Hawaii will have a great run this year. Totally Agree. With a frosh starting setter and the passing woes of last year, I would want the best passers on the court to start the season (and most matches). Otineru needs to be on the court. I expect that the Opp will be a revolving door, as will be the setting position, until mid-way into the WAC.

to clarify something that was pulled from the Star-Bulletin vb blog. Lindsey was in the arena yesterday. She was not practicing with the Wahine. nor was she in a wedding dress ... or bridesmaid's dress. she was back in hawaii for the wedding of a high school friend. LOL! I take it no high heels either? Why would she be in the arena? She's not press, not a former or current Wahine, not a scout...

She was a pretty good passer in high school and Shoji is looking at her to expand her role on passing. However, even if she doesn't pass, Houston is available to pass and Kaaihue is available to pass while Kaufman is in the back row.

Kaufman is "working" to be a primary passer?
YOU ALREADY HAVE A SEASONED PASSER IN OTINERU and she passes better than Houston and Kaaihue.
Sheesh!

Just throwing more information into the decision making process. According to the Honolulu Advertiser, Kaufman is going to return to the opposite position. But again, I don't think everyone should be in such a hurry to criticize. Shoji is making it very clear that practically everyone is going to see some time this weekend at various positions. Those who play best during game time will be given the nod. In past years, Shoji announced his starters and subbed in players during the first few weeks and some of those subs won starting jobs by performing well in those matches.

Prime example is Lily Kahumoku. She did not start her Freshman year, but earned it VERY quickly after a couple of matches. Her first start was against UCLA, the last match of the HAL Classic. This was after opening on the road against Cal, I believe, on the bench and two HAL matches prior to UCLA.

in the past, it seems like Shoji likes to let his starters from a previous season keep their starting spots ... let them play & show that they deserve to keep it. and if not, well let's start going down the depth chart ...

I totally agree with you, Cubicle. Dave is kinda conservative in that way. Especially for Kaufman and Lee, who were pressed into starting roles and did reasonably well. They deserve a chance to keep their jobs, but should also be aware that they have Otineru, Ka'aihue and Keefe behind them.

Can't knock going with experience. Unless a newcomer is head and shoulders above the incumbent (IMO). The competition has been good and I think everyone has raised the level of their play and their intensity. Dave's said he wants to play a lot of people this weekend so hopefully he gets that chance (in a good way).

Whether or not it's farfetched for the Wahine to aim for the title this year is not my bag here. I just want to say, in case you are not aware, the Wahine this year definitely will be better than last year. After Kim and lily left, the team went into a mediocre period, despite that surprising year they won 30 matches. It seems that this year's high jumping Wahine edition has more athleticism in every position and should not be plagued by poor passing which cost them several matches last year. It's great that the Wahine a positive outlook about winning. It makes us fans feel good too! ;D
