So has anyone actually ever seen someone land on a ball, and, if so, injure herself? Everyone always reacts as if someone had rolled a grenade on to the court.
Just curious. I haven't.

Sure, my daughter, who has the vertical of an elephant, was setting in warm-ups for the league championship match when a ball from the other team rolled under her; sprained her ankle on the way down. Since the third setter was out for academic reasons the team had to switch from a 6-2 to a 5-1 for the first time all year. Since this was 8th grade that didn't go over too well.

Yep, I have. We were practicing with another team on an adjacent court when one of their balls rolled onto our court. Our middle was going up for a hit and landed right on top of the ball and rolled her ankle. Fortunately, she was able to play after a couple of days of rest but it was a definite scare.
Also, I have a friend who landed on a ball as she was landing and blew out her knee. A ball on the court is definitely something of which to be concerned.

The wild high-volume concern expressed when a ball rolls across the court is not because of the frequency of ball-related injuries, but to the potential consequences of the injury. Landing on a ball during hitting drills can cause any number of very bad injuries.

I've seen more kids than I would like to admit land on a ball.
Sometimes, it causes major injury...other times, you get lucky and its nothing more than a scare.
I think if you get the center of the ball, its much better than landing off-center on it......

Also heard of a broken wrist from the player trying to soften the landing after landing on a ball.
My son was out for two weeks when landing on a ball during a jump serve...

I don't want to make light of the accident, but that's not a very good jump serve if you land on the ball.

I don't want to make light of the accident, but that's not a very good jump serve if you land on the ball. Open gym. Multiple courts. Practice. You should see how many volleyballs litter the court during serve drills.

Oh. You mean it wasn't _his_ serve he landed on. Gotcha.

I was at a high school match Tuesday where the bleachers were just feet behind the back line, so close in fact that when some of the girls were serving, the people in the front row had to move their feet out of the way. When the teams took serve warm-ups before the match it was like we in the crowd were being bombed by balls! I can only imagine what it must be like on the court and surprised there aren't more accidents.

This thread is ironic to me. I just came in to elevate my foot and read Volleytalk. I slipped in the backyard, fell down stone steps, sprained my ankle (hope that's all it is), slammed my wrist into the ground and whacked my jaw on the wall. I guess I was lucky I didn't knock myself out! Oh well, poor me. Read on.

I don't want to make light of the accident, but that's not a very good jump serve if you land on the ball. It was after the other side shanked the pass under the net after trying to pass his serve. He was in the air a long time! PS:the ball rolled over from the adjacent court where the 14 girls were warming up...

The same issue applies to tennis. It's more dangerous in tennis because of the size of the ball (small). I have seen many tennis players slip and fall on a tennis ball. I laugh all the time -- I can't help it -- because it seems like I'm watching some slapstick physical comedy along the lines of Jerry Lewis, Buster Keaton, Chevy Chase, and John Ritter, among others. But then, I feel guilty about it, so I wipe that smile off my face real quick. But deep inside, I'm still laughing because I know it'll never happen to me.
